Red Sox recall Steven Wright, Brayan Villarreal, and Brock Holt

The Sox use expanded rosters to their advantage and call up a few more minor-league pieces with big-league experience.

Triple-A Pawtucket's season is over, so the Red Sox have decided to make use of September's expanded rosters. They recalled Triple-A starter and knuckleballer Steven Wright, infielder Brock Holt, and reliever Brayan Villarreal from the PawSox according to Alex Speier, giving the Sox more options and depth for the last couple of weeks of the regular season.

Wright has been with the Red Sox multiple times this season, generally in a long relief role except for one spot start against the Astros. Assuming that manager John Farrell keeps Ryan Lavarnway away from Wright, Boston should be able to get some use from the knuckler. In case you've forgotten, or blocked it out of your mind:

Holt gives Boston an actual backup second baseman, as well as another option for third base and shortstop, though, with Xander Bogaerts around, he won't be the primary choice for the latter two.

Brayan Villarreal, acquired from the Tigers in the three-team deal that brought back Jake Peavy and sent Jose Iglesias to Chicago, has plenty of velocity but little knowledge of where it's going. He's more of a long-term project for relief than the options already in the bullpen, but extending his season at all to see what needs fixing makes a lot of sense given Boston's considerable division lead.
