Mike Carp's game-winning grand slam, and post-homer antics

Al Messerschmidt

Go, Magicarp, and be super effective.

You know, this makes Brandon Workman giving up a game-tying run in regulation pretty alright. The Rays, desperate for a win on a night they could lose ground they might not be able to afford to in the AL wild card race, in the second-to-last game they have against the division-leading Red Sox, had their brief moment of hope ripped away from them thanks to the bat of Mike Carp in extras.

Joel Peralta came into the game in relief of closer Fernando Rodney, only to walk Dustin Pedroia and then intentionally walk David Ortiz. Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, came on in relief of Peralta, only to walk Mike Napoli. Then came Carp, pinch-hitting for Jonny Gomes to face the right-handed Fauxsto, and the bases cleared with one swing of the bat on the first and only pitch he saw:

The last go-ahead pinch-hit grand slam in extra innings came back in 2003, when Adam Dunn was still with the Cincinnati Reds and all of 23 years old. This blast led to Boston dropping the Rays to 9.5 back in the AL East, reducing the Sox' magic number to eight, and pushing the Rays back to just one game up over the closest wild card competition.

Plus, it came with more beard weirdness...
