Red Sox prospect Alex Hassan headed to DL with fractured finger

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

This likely ends any chance of his joining the Red Sox in 2013.

While it looked like Red Sox prospect Alex Hassan could be a September call-up when rosters expand, that is now in danger, as he has been placed on the minor-league disabled list with a fractured finger. According to the Pawtucket Times' Brendan McGair, Hassan suffered the injury on a bunt attempt during Thursday's PawSox game.

Hassan already missed time at the beginning of the year with a fractured foot, so this bookends what was otherwise a very successful season for the 25-year-old. Hassan was placed on the 40-man roster last November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and then went on to break out at Pawtucket, hitting .315/.429/.459 with 18 extra-base hits in 53 games to go along with a solid 35 walks against 49 strikeouts.

There's still work to be done in Hassan's game before he's considered a legitimate option for the bigs, but that will all have to wait until 2014, as the minor-league season will be over before Hassan is likely able to return from this injury.
