Red Sox call up Brandon Workman, Alex Wilson placed on disabled list

USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox have called up Brandon Workman to fill in for an injured Alex Wilson.

Jackie Bradley Jr. isn't the only one making his way up to the majors Tuesday night. Right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman has joined him and the Red Sox in Seattle, with Alex Wilson hitting the disabled list with a sprained thumb to make room.

Workman, 24, has earned his first trip up with a strong year split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. Drafted in the second round of the 2010 MLB Draft (the first of Boston's picks from that year to make the jump), Workman has plugged steadily away in the minors, rising steadily throw the system and producing solid numbers at every level.

2013 has arguably provided him with a breakout year, but mostly that's just because he's largely maintained his production at the highest levels of the minor leagues. While he's only thrown 35 innings in Triple-A, they've been strong, with a 2.80 ERA, and 34 strikeouts to 13 walks.

While he's often been projected as a reliever in the long run, Workman has showed signs of being able to go deeper into games than we've seen from him before, and may have changed some minds both inside and outside of the organization. He'll almost certainly be used as a reliever for now, though, with the Sox taking an all-hands-on-deck approach to their current injury woes.

What remains to be seen is how ready Workman is for this jump. It's only been a few weeks since he was in Double-A, and while the jump to Double-A is usually the hardest to make, skipping a level after only the briefest of visits is never easy.

Jose De La Torre has also left the team, being optioned to Triple-A in order to make room for Jackie Bradley Jr.
