Red Sox place Andrew Miller on the DL, call Alfredo Aceves up

Andrew Miller is headed to the disabled list, leaving Alfredo Aceves free to return to the Red Sox once again.

Having suffered an injury during Saturday's disappointing extra-innings loss to the Angels, Andrew Miller is headed to the disabled list, with Alfredo Aceves joining the team to replace him.

Even though we haven't heard anything on the results of the X-Rays taken of Miller's left foot, this is clearly not a good sign. Removed from last night's game after coming up lame trying to cover home plate, it's still not entirely clear what went wrong with Miller. Eventually we'll find out just how bad this injury is, but for now it's enough to see him out for at least the next two weeks.

Though the return of Aceves will see the Red Sox without a lefty reliever for the night--Craig Breslow is not likely available after pitching in three straight games--he will provide some insurance against a short John Lackey outing (or extra innings) running the bullpen completely into the ground. Unfortunately for Aceves, though, he might be headed right back to the minor leagues after the pen gets a breather. Realistically, he's more valuable to the Sox as a potential spot starter than as a long reliever.

Now we just have to wait to hear if Andrew Miller's injury is the sort that will keep him out for weeks, or months. Should it be the latter, the Red Sox may have to step up their pursuit of bullpen help as the deadline nears.
