Salem Red Sox update: Sean Coyle, Henry Ramos, Mike Augliera

J. Meric

Coyle is still injured, Ramos makes his way to the updates, and Augliera finishes off a rough June.

Coyle missed the entire month of June with a knee injury that has him on the minor-league disabled list. According to Sox Prospects, Coyle is working out in Fort Myers at the team facility, so he's at least on the right track to return to game action. The fact he's missed development time only underscores that Mookie Betts might end up sticking at Low-A Greenville for the rest of the year, though: Coyle is going to need the reps when he does return, and complicating the playing time issue would keep him from maximizing what's left of his 2013. That doesn't mean things will go down with that, it's just something to remember when wondering why Betts is still at Greenville.

Ramos is new to the updates, as someone had to fill the void left by Garin Cecchini's promotion. You might not be overly impressed with his numbers, but some context is needed. Ramos used to be a soccer player who didn't become a full-time baseball player until he turned pro after the Red Sox selected him in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. He's still not a huge guy, at 6-2 and 190 pounds, but there are reasons to think he'll fill out his frame and add power. Sox Prospects has the info you need:

Powerful and athletic frame showing signs of already filling out. Switch hitter. High power ceiling, with present ability to drive the ball with some power. Smooth swing, especially left-handed. Raw approach and plate discipline. Beginning to learn how to be selective at the plate. Plus arm but currently rough defensively. Possesses the ability to make good strides as he becomes more experienced judging fly balls. Slightly above-average speed.

Ramos exploded in June, hitting .326/.400/.537 four homers, 10 extra-base hits, and 17 strikeouts against 13 walks over 27 games. He's kicked off July in a similar fashion, with three hits in his first seven at-bats this month. He needs to work on learning how to effectively steal bases -- or just cut it out altogether -- but you can see real progress happening here.

Augliera was doing pretty well in 2013, but June reversed that trend. After coming on strong in May with nearly twice as many ground outs as air outs, a 2.7 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 3.34 ERA, Augliera posted 1.6, 1.4, and 7.15 rates in those respective categories the next month. His season line looks pretty shot because of it, and 33 hits in 22 innings helped destroy a hit rate that had, to that point, been looking solid thanks to improved command.

Between the increased homers, reduced K/BB, and massive jump in hits, it's likely Augliera's command suffered in June. He pitched a bit better to end the month, but more work needs to be done to keep the free passes in check and get back to succeeding with the ball low in the zone. Hopefully, June was just a bump in the road and learning experience.
