Sox fans, the annual Hall of Fame induction is taking place this weekend in Cooperstown. As each of you know, the BBWAA failed to elect any candidates to the Hall of Fame on their most recent vote in January. However, many of you may not realize that a voting body called the Expansion Era Committee (formerly known as the Veterans Committee) has elections for players who are no longer eligible for the BBWAA ballot. This December, the Expansion Era Committee will be voting on players who made their biggest contributions between 1972-1991. One of the players eligible for the Expansion Era ballot is Sox legend Dwight Evans.
With just under 2,500 career hits and 400 career home runs, Evans has hitting stats strong enough to earn him a bronze Hall of Fame plaque. Couple those hitting stats with his eight Gold Gloves in right field and it is hard to believe that Evans hasn't already been enshrined in Cooperstown. Moreover, the evolution of statistics through sabermetrics has cemented Evans' status as an overlooked Hall of Fame candidate as his 66.7 career WAR, 127 career OPS+, and .370 OBP stand out in comparison to many recent Hall of Fame inductees.
Patrick Languzzi has worked hard to put together a website he named “Call to the Hall” to create awareness for Evans' overlooked Hall of Fame candidacy and even started an on-line petition to ensure that Evans is added to the upcoming Expansion Era ballot. Back in January, I interviewed Languzzi about his website and petition and posted my interview as a fanpost. With the Hall of Fame back in the news this weekend, I wanted to make everyone aware of the petition which already has 1,500-plus signatures. Those 1,500-plus signatures are impressive but are just a small percentage of Over The Monster and the Red Sox Nation communities that I know support “Dewey” for the Hall of Fame. Sign the petiton and make your voice heard!
