MLB Draft 2013 results: Red Sox select LHP Mike Adams #203 overall

Jim Rogash

The Red Sox finally draft a college senior, likely giving them some budget flexibility.

Yet another pitcher, and another lefty, as the Red Sox use their seventh-round pick in the 2013 MLB draft to select senior relief pitcher Mike Adams from the University of Tampa. As a senior, this is likely a pick the Red Sox will be able to sign well below slot, giving them money to work with for either someone they've already drafted -- say, catcher and third-round pick Jonathan Denney -- or for a high-ceiling high schooler they have yet to select.

The 6-foot-3, 215 pound Adams was a Division II All-American for Tampa after becoming their go-to bullpen guy. MLB.com says his top pitch is his curve -- they grade it as plus -- and describe his change-up as "serviceable." From the sounds of it, he's someone whom the Red Sox will immediately stick in relief in the minors, in the hopes they get something out of him and he ends up being more than just someone they could sign under slot.

Baseball America rated Adams #351 in their top-500 -- getting someone who is ranked anywhere at the price they'll likely get Adams for isn't bad at all in the seventh round, especially not if he can turn that plus curve into something.
