Red Sox vs. Blue Jays lineups: Mike Carp starts at first

Leon Halip

Mike Carp will start at first base Thursday night as the Red Sox kick off a big series against the Blue Jays.

It's another battle of the "hey, weren't those guys aces once?" for the Red Sox as they send Jon Lester against Chien-Ming Wang Thursday night in Fenway.

Yes, this is coming one night after John Lackey and Roy Oswalt faced off. Of these four pitchers, John Lackey is the one who stands out from the rest as an effective starter. What world is this?

Boston Red Sox (47-33)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Shane Victorino, RF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. David Ortiz, DH
  5. Mike Carp, 1B
  6. Daniel Nava, LF
  7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
  8. Stephen Drew, SS
  9. Jose Iglesias, 3B
Starting Pitcher -- Jon Lester

Toronto Blue Jays (39-38)

TBA

Starting Pitcher -- Chien-Ming Wang

Having gotten past the bizarre reality of those two pitching matchups, we arrive at a similar lineup to what we've grown used to of late. The one big difference: Mike Carp playing in place of Mike Napoli. While Napoli has come up with a few hits of late--he's on a five-game hitting streak, in fact--they've been predominantly of the bloop variety. Plus it's just good to know that Carp is healthy enough to play, given that he's only seen action once since getting hurt on the 16th.

The only concern is that having Mike Carp compared positively to Mike Napoli and John Lackey compared positively to Jon Lester means none of this is happening and we're all going to wake up soon.
