Red Sox to start Alfredo Aceves against Rays on Wednesday?

Jared Wickerham

Someone has to, you know.

Franklin Morales was supposed to pitch on Wednesday in place of Clay Buchholz, who is day-to-day with neck tightness. However, Morales threw two innings against the Rays on Monday night to close out a 14-inning affair, and is therefore unavailable -- in addition, he might be needed in the bullpen on Wednesday, if the Red Sox don't get to rest any of their relievers on Tuesday.

This means someone else needs to be called up to start, and it looks like that man might be Alfredo Aceves:

Aceves pitched well in his last spot start, going six innings while allowing just one hit against the Phillies, before he was sent back to Pawtucket once more. He's been pitching better in Pawtucket since he was sent back there once more, too, though, the five homers in five starts are a bit worrisome.

Given many pieces of the bullpen could use more than just a day off, a similar effort will be necessary from Aceves. It's situations like this one, by the way, that test a team's starting depth: Aceves might not be your first choice, but it's good that they have options even after someone like Morales becomes unavailable.
