Red Sox vs. Phillies lineups: Stephen Drew bats sixth

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Stephen Drew will bat sixth as Alfredo Aceves gets the start in place of the injured Clay Buchholz.

The Red Sox will have Stephen Drew, of all people, batting sixth Monday night as they try to start their interleague schedule with a win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Boston Red Sox (31-20)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Daniel Nava, RF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. David Ortiz, DH
  5. Mike Napoli, 1B
  6. Stephen Drew, SS
  7. Mike Carp, LF
  8. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, 3B

Starting Pitcher -- Alfredo Aceves

Philadelphia Phillies (24-26)

  1. Ben Revere, CF
  2. Michael Young, 3B
  3. Jimmy Rollins, SS
  4. Ryan Howard, 1B
  5. Delmon Young, DH
  6. Domonic Brown, LF
  7. John Mayberry, RF
  8. Freddy Galvis, 2B
  9. Erik Kratz, C

Starting Pitcher -- Tyler Cloyd

It's been a while since the Red Sox had a shortstop batting sixth, but right about now Drew is hitting like he belongs there. After a 3-for-4 performance on Sunday, Drew is hitting .270/.353/.486 in May, trailing only Daniel Nava, David Ortiz, and Dustin Pedroia on the team (Jose Iglesias too, but that's in just eight at bats). While he's actually shown slightly more power than Jarrod Saltalamacchia in that period, Salty is a better fit for the bottom of the lineup, where bases need to be cleared rather than a rally sustained.

Of course, it doesn't matter how the lineup is arranged if Alfredo Aceves does what he did in his last start. And, frankly, it's hard to expect anything much out of him. Hopefully he'll come up with a few good innings against a Philadelphia lineup that's had trouble scoring, giving the Red Sox a chance to win a game they're not necessarily expected to.
