Red Sox vs. Twins lineups: Ryan Lavarnway, Pedro Ciriaco start

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Red Sox will have backups-a-plenty in the lineup as they take on Scott Diamond and the Minnesota Twins.

The Red Sox are out to make it four straight wins Saturday night as they send Ryan Dempster to the mound against Scott Diamond and the Twins.

The Sox will unfortunately be without three starters, in part because of an injury to Shane Victorino, and in part because of the lefty Scott Diamond on the mound for the Twins. Jonny Gomes (or Daniel Nava, depending on how you look at it) will fill in for Victorino, with Ryan Lavarnway and Pedro Ciriaco taking the places of Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stephen Drew respectively.

Boston Red Sox (25-17)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Jonny Gomes, LF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. David Ortiz, DH
  5. Mike Napoli, 1B
  6. Daniel Nava, RF
  7. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
  8. Ryan Lavarnway, C
  9. Pedro Ciriaco, SS

Starting Pitcher -- Ryan Dempster

Minnesota Twins (18-20)

  1. Jamey Carroll, 2B
  2. Joe Mauer, DH
  3. Justin Morneau, 1B
  4. Josh Willingham, LF
  5. Ryan Doumit, C
  6. Oswaldo Arcia, RF
  7. Trevor Plouffe, 3B
  8. Aaron Hicks, CF
  9. Pedro Florimon, SS

Starting Pitcher -- Scott Diamond

Ryan Dempster suffered his first truly bad start of the year in his last start against the Blue Jays. And while his previous outing against these very Twins saw them score four runs with him on the mound, three Boston errors played a big role in that, as evidenced by the fact that he allowed only six baserunners in seven innings of work.

Of course, even had Dempster not had those errors behind him, given what the Red Sox did against Scott Diamond, picking up all of three hits in seven innings, he still wouldn't have had a chance at the win. Hopefully the Sox are hitting somewhat better now and can actually produce some runs this time.
