Red Sox Vs. Yankees lineups: David Ross catches Ryan Dempster

USA TODAY Sports

David Ross and Ryan Dempster will make their Red Sox debuts Thursday night as the team goes for the sweep in New York.

The Red Sox are out for the sweep Thursday night, and it'll be another new lineup that John Farrell calls on to get the job done.

Boston Red Sox (2-0)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Shane Victorino, RF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. Mike Napoli, 1B
  5. Jonny Gomes, DH
  6. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
  7. Jackie Bradley Jr., LF
  8. David Ross, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS
Starting Pitcher -- Ryan Dempster

New York Yankees (0-2)

  1. Brett Gardner, CF
  2. Robinson Cano, 2B
  3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
  4. Travis Hafner, DH
  5. Vernon Wells, LF
  6. Ichiro Suzuki, RF
  7. Eduardo Nunez, SS
  8. Lyle Overbay, 1B
  9. Francisco Cervelli, C
Starting Pitcher -- Andy Pettitte

It seems like Will Middlebrooks has been displaced from the #5 spot now, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jonny Gomes having taken over against right and left-handed pitchers respectively over the last two games. Only time will tell if that's for good or not. Meanwhile, Jackie Bradley Jr. is moving up in the world, batting seventh today after starting his first two games in the eighth spot.

The only outright swaps are David Ross and Jonny Gomes, which are obvious moves to make with the left-handed Andy Pettitte on the mound for the Yankees. With the Sox heavy on right-handed hitters, hopefully they'll continue their high-scoring ways.

One thing to note is just how deep this lineup reads right now against the southpaw. Iglesias is the obvious question mark in a group that's otherwise filled with tough outs for a lefty, right on down to David Ross. For a team that's missing two starters, including David Ortiz, they really have managed to put out an intimidating starting nine for Pettitte. We'll see if he's up to the task.
