Red Sox vs. Royals lineups: Shane Victorino sits for game one

USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox will be without Shane Victorino Sunday in game one of their day-night doubleheader with the Royals.

Shane Victorino will miss at least the first game of Sunday's day - night doubleheader after tweaking his back in Saturday's win over the Royals.

Victorino hurt himself while squaring to bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning. It's not clear how big of a deal this is, but it's at least enough for John Farrell not to want his right fielder starting both games of a doubleheader. Daniel Nava will be the one tasked to fill Fenway's large corner, which is far from ideal, but certainly better than having Jonny Gomes or Mike Carp make the attempt.

Boston Red Sox (12-4)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Daniel Nava, RF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. David Ortiz, DH
  5. Mike Napoli, 1B
  6. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
  7. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
  8. Stephen Drew, SS
  9. Jonny Gomes, LF

Starting Pitcher -- Ryan Dempster

Kansas City Royals (8-7)

  1. Alex Gordon, LF
  2. Alcides Escobar, SS
  3. Billy Butler, DH
  4. Eric Hosmer, 1B
  5. Lorenzo Cain, CF
  6. Mike Moustakas, 3B
  7. Jeff Francoeur, RF
  8. Salvador Perez, C
  9. Chris Getz, 2B

Starting Pitcher -- Ervin Santana

Jonny Gomes drops all the way down to ninth with the right-handed Santana on the mound. Still, if he's a good fit against any type of righty, it's fly-ball pitchers like Ervin Santana in a cramped park like Fenway. The Red Sox have been suffering from a bit of a power outage these first few weeks, but they're not a team without home run power.

What will be scary are fly balls from the Royals, partially because of the aforementioned Fenway situation, but also because that is not a pretty defensive outfield. The Red Sox have done a really good job of backing up their pitchers defensively, but effectively going from Victorino to Gomes...that's not a good switch.
