Top Offensive Seasons: Using wRC+ for offense, Dustin Pedroia leads the way with the top 3 offensive seasons posting a 133 mark in 2011, a 128 mark during his injured 2010 year and a 127 mark during his MVP campaign of 2008. The only other player to post a 120+ season at 2B was John Valentin in 1997.

Top Defensive Seasons: Pedroia defensive prowess is well known and in 7 seasons as a starter he has managed 5 seasons of 10+ Def Ratings with a max of 20.5 in his fairly amazing 2011. Scott Fletcher posted the top mark of 22.3 in 1993.

Top Overall Seasons: Using WAR, Pedroia runs away with this, posting all of the top 5 seasons including 7.6 WAR in 2011 and 6.5 WAR in 2008.

Worst Seasons: While 1996 and 1998 look pretty poor, I'm giving this on to the 2000 troika of Offerman, Frye and Lansing. Offerman and Frye combined for 0.7 WAR but Lansing in his mere 49 games managed a -1.1 all by himself to give the position a robust -0.4 for the year.

Worst Defense: While you typically don't see many iron gloves placed at 2B for any length of time, the Sox did run out Jeff Frye for a considerable amount of games. Frye managed the following Def marks: -10.0, -0.3, -5.8, -1.1.

Average Seasons (2.0+ WAR): 14 of 25 (56%)

Above-Average Seasons (4.0+ WAR): 6 of 25 (24%)

Star Seasons (6.0+ WAR): 2 of 25 (8%)

Notes: Until Pedroia started in 2007 the Sox ran through 10 different starting 2B in a matter of 14 years (1994 to 2007). One of my favorite Sox from the 80's - Marty Barrett makes this list and while he wasn't a very good hitter or an outstanding fielder, what he did well was bunt....Barrett had 22 sacrifices in 87 and 20 in 88. Basically it was Boggs get on-base and Barrett bunt him over from the 2-hole for most of the late 80's.
