25 Years of Red Sox: LF

Now we come to the outfield and we start with the gentlemen who played in front of the monster. No-one will ever likely play it better than Yaz, and as you can see from this list, many over the past 25 years have not.....but at least some could really hit!

Top Offensive Seasons: These mostly belong to one Manny Ramirez, who holds the top mark with a 185 in 2002 and then the second mark with a 163 in 2006 and the third with a 158 in 2003. Mike Greenwell's outstanding 1988 season comes in 4th with a 157. Manny top the 150 wRC+ mark in 6 seasons.

Top Defensive Seasons: The LF marks here are all pretty much in the negative, so relatively Greenwell was a pretty good defender in LF (seasons of 5.2, 5.4), but Troy O'Leary takes the top mark with a 7.9 in his 2000 season. Jacoby Ellsbury's 2008 is worth mentioning but is not being counted here as he appeared in more games in CF that year.

Top Overall Seasons: Greenwell's 7.8 WAR in 1988 comes out on top as Manny's WAR values are hurt severely by his atrociously poor defense. Manny's top WAR marks come in at 6.0, 5.3, 5.2. Jason Bay's 4.5 in 2009 rounds out the top 5.

Worst Season: This almost went to Carl Crawford who, across 127 games in 2011, managed a -0.2 WAR along with a ton of bellyaching but even that was a positive when compared to 1992. An injured Greenwell was replaced by Billy Hatcher to the tune of a -2.5 WAR between them.

Worst Defender: This is an easy call. One look down the list and you see Def Marks of -25.8, -32.6, -30.8 for Manny. Manny being Manny I guess.

Average Seasons (2.0+ WAR): 15 of 25

Above Average Seasons (4.0+ WAR): 5 of 25

Star Seasons (6.0+ WAR): 2 of 25

Notes: This position was pretty much Greenwell & Manny with the two being the prominent LFers for 16 of the 25 years

Top Red Sox LF of the Past 25 Years: Manny Ramirez

With apologies to Mike Greenwell, who made it a surprisingly close call (21.7 WAR vs. 30.2 WAR), Manny's bat deserves to be on the team and in my eventual lineup. Even with the defensive shortcomings, Manny is the top LFer over the past 25 years. Oh, and that personality!
