Red Sox vs. Rays score: James Loney saves scoreless tie after Jeremy Hellickson departs

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Jeremy Hellickson is already out of the game, but without a run allowed thanks to an unbelievable double play from James Loney.

The Rays and Red Sox are still scoreless thanks to an incredible play from James Loney, but the Rays are already into the bullpen after just two innings.

While Hellickson was strong in the top of the first, the top of the second saw the right-hander who struggled so much towards the end of the year completely lose the plate. While the walk to David Ortiz may have been of the semi-intentional variety, giving him nothing to hit and accepting that he'd simply take first, the four-pitch pass to Napoli that followed was almost certainly not. And when Daniel Nava hit a line drive to load the bases with nobody out, Joe Maddon had seen enough. In came Jamey Wright.

Jamey Wright did what he needed to do against Jarrod Saltalamacchia. For the second straight night, Boston's catcher failed to so much as bring the man in from third with a sacrifice fly when given the chance, taking a called third strike on the outside part of the plate. Against Stephen Drew, though, it wasn't Wright who got the job done, but Loney, leading to bring down a rocket line drive that could well have cleared the bases, and then firing to second where Mike Napoli was well off the bag, ending the inning in the blink of an eye.

If that play is any indication of what's to come in Game 4, it could be a long night for the Red Sox. And given that Matt Moore--yes, the Game 1 starter--just got a double play to erase a leadoff walk in the third, that's starting to feel like a distinct possibility.
