Hey folks. I was just wondering if any of you avid Red Sox fans had thought along the same lines. Based on the contracts at hand, we are committed to Carl Crawford (and he's unmovable anyway). We've done a good job getting offense out of our outfield without Crawford or Ellsbury, and there is enough young depth to think that we can score a playoff-team's share of runs without him.
Ellsbury makes $8 million this year and comes up for arbitration next year. He will be a free agent in 2014. A year and a half of cost-controlled Ellsbury could be very valuable to a contending team with a sputtering offense such as the Dodgers, the Reds, or the Giants. Could moving him now be a way to bring in the solid starting pitcher we so desperately need, or a bright AAA pitching prospect?
