Ryan Kalish Avoiding DL For Now

Shortly after his return to Pawtucket on July 12, Ryan Kalish was once again missing time due to injury. At first, it wasn't known whether or not he would require a stint on the disabled list to remedy the issue with his knee. He might be in Pawtucket, but with the way Red Sox outfielders have spent time on the DL this year -- and with Ryan Sweeney still not seemingly 100 percent following his own return -- it's important that Kalish is healthy.

There's also the whole 2011 season -- and the start of 2012 -- being lost to injury thanks to both shoulder and neck problems for the 24-year-old center fielder, so anymore time lost at this point is just piling on that keeps him from getting his development where it needs to be.

It doesn't sound as if Kalish is going to go on the DL at this time, though, with ABC6's Courtney Fallon reporting that Kalish will sit out the next few games for precautionary purposes instead. The MRI on his knee showed no structural damage, so rest might be just what he needs to get back into game form.

Hopefully this all clears itself up soon, because, as said, Kalish has missed more than enough time already in his minor-league career, and his recent stint in Boston reminded us that he's not quite ready for full-time play in the bigs just yet. Even if he was, in theory, a better option than what remained of Marlon Byrd's career.
