Felix Doubront took a fly ball off the back of the head during pre-game activities, according to Evan Drellich of MLB.com. He walked off the field on his own, followed by two medical personnel, and there's no word yet of whether the ball caused any damage or if this is just precautionary.
Doubront told Maureen Mullen of CSNNE.com that the ball hit him on the ear, but that "he's okay."
Doubront is scheduled to pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, in Tampa Bay. Should something be more wrong with him than a nasty bump on the head, there's no word yet on what the Red Sox would do. Aaron Cook is recovering from the gash on his knee, suffered in his first start against the Orioles, and isn't eligible to return in time for Doubront's start were a replacement needed. It's unlikely Daniel Bard, transitioning from the bullpen to rotation, would be moved up a day during a stretch in which the rotation is already without days off.
We'll keep you posted as to Doubront's status as news comes in, but it sounds as if this is more embarrassing than it is damaging.
