While originally excited by the signing of Lackey and Crawford, it seems as if both signings are doomed to go down in
Red Sox lore as terrible decisions. With news coming out that Crawford is seemingly nowhere near ready to play this season and Lackey having just undergone TJ surgey it appears completely plausible that neither will be providing this team with anything of value anytime soon. It seems as though the one thing the Red Sox could use beyond all else is some financial flexibility.
As I understand it Crawford is due to make 22mil for the next 5 or 6? years.
Lackey is a bit of a question mark making 15mil/year for the next 3/4? years. (Read several times that in his contract there is an injury clause that adds a year to the end of the contract at very cheap rate.) Making his contract come to an average or around 11mil a year.
Assuming Lackey and Crawford come back and do not wow us with excellence, how much of their contracts would the Red Sox most likely have to pay to make them reasonable trade bait? How would this compare to the
Yankees deal to unload AJ Burnett on the
Pirates?
