I don't know what to say.

The Red Sox held a 9-0 lead in the fifth, then a 9-1 lead in the sixth. They allowed seven in the seventh, and another seven in the eighth. It's a single-game disaster the likes of which I've never seen before, coming in Fenway and against the Yankees as it did.

This bullpen is historically bad. Immediately that reminds us of John Lackey last year, but this is, somehow, worse. Far worse, actually. Half again the ERA, and from a position where you expect to have better numbers. They are death to leads.

It's April, it's early, but in the same way that it was hard to see a team like the 2011 Giants do anything with their offense, no matter how great the pitching, it's getting difficult to see a future for this team without pulling a bullpen rabbit out of a hat, or making some sort of move that would almost certainly require paying a great deal for relatively little improvement.

Hope is getting to be in short supply.
