Jose Iglesias Sent To Pawtucket, Mike Aviles Wins Shortstop Job

Jose Iglesias has been sent to Pawtucket, with Mike Aviles winning the battle at short. Prior to the spring, the Red Sox felt Iglesias needed more time in the minors to work on his hitting before committing to him in the majors, and his performance at the plate during the last few weeks has done little to convince them that this was the wrong course of action. His glove is fantastic, and more than ready for the bigs, but that bat still needs work before he can even be replacement level offensively.

With Aviles around, they're able to wait for Iglesias. As Ben Buchanan pointed out yesterday, the time just isn't now for Iglesias given his struggles against lesser pitching in Pawtucket. And Aviles, while not the guy you might expect to be productive, has been nothing but when healthy in his time in the majors.

This wasn't the only move, as Lars Anderson was sent back to Pawtucket despite a strong spring showing and productive second half last year -- this is either because they Red Sox want the extra pitcher on their roster while they sort out the staff, or because Anderson has no future in Boston even as a bench bat and backup behind Adrian Gonzalez. It's likely the former, but they've already shown a willingness to deal him, too. Then again, letting him hit every day in Pawtucket -- and hoping he hits well -- might give them an extra trade chip this July.

Justin Germano, Josh Kroeger, and Doug Mathis were all reassigned to minor league camp as part of today's cuts as well. No surprises there, as none of that group seemed like they were in the running for the 25th spot on the Opening Day roster.
