Red Sox Top Prospect Voting #16: Brandon Workman Wins A Close One

It was a three-way fight for the 15th spot, but Brandon Workman has come through by one vote to take his place on our top prospect list.

Our second round pick in 2010, Workman is a big righty with some decent gas and hopefully the long-term ability to stick as a starter if he can expand his arsenal of secondary pitches. Aptly named, Workman was remarkably consistent in 2011, putting up strong if rarely flashy performances time and again throughout the season.

The question about Workman comes with his development. He's already 23 and will be 24 by the time the year is over, but he never advanced past Greenville last year. Even if he hops all the way up to Portland, he'll likely always have that question mark hanging over him until he actually performs on the major league level. Still, pitching depth in the system is all-important, and a guy like Workman projects to be is exactly the sort the Sox could use right about now.
