Oswalt could make decision by tomorrow on his next team according to a source

If I had any faith in hot stove reports left...

… I’d think this is a good sign for the Red Sox (unless I overlooked a major arm injury on a rotation based somewhere in the South).

However, I’m too jaded to think we’ll actually hear anything tomorrow.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

Finally....

no more lamenting!
Oswalt to JetBlue Park coming soon…

Breaking news!

Boston Red Sox announce that they will move to Mississippi as part of their contract with newly-signed pitcher Roy Oswalt. The team will be known as the Biloxi Confederates.

Hey, that's driving distance from me (New Orleans). Cool!

Seriously, though, what do you think are the percentages right now? Off the top of me head I’d guess…

Texas – 40 percent (where he really wants to be and they want him if they can afford him and find a spot)
St. Louis – 20 percent (where he’d also like, but they say they’re done)
Cincinnati – 15 percent (where he wouldn’t mind being, but where they also say they’re done)
Field – 15 percent
Boston – 10 percent (where there’s good money and the best professional opportunity, and he has never had a kind word for)

by dsharp on Feb 22, 2012 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno what I'd say for percentages

but I’d guess order
1 St Louis
2 Boston
3 Rangers
4 mystery team (damn they’re gonna be good this year, locking up Pujols, Fielder, Wilson, and Cespedes already)

by wolf9309 on Feb 22, 2012 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Wait... Mystery Team??

C’mon, the Angels were clearly going to pursue a slugger and pitcher, right? So they weren’t exactly a mystery, were they?

I’ll give you on the Fielder to the Tigers, and Cespedes to the Athletics (wait… the A’s??), but the other two didn’t go to a “mystery team” per se, did they?

As for your order, and with percentages??

1. Mystery Team (40% – I really think he’s waiting for someone to get hurt for a better location)
2. Rangers (20% – even if they say they’re done shopping Uehara, not sure I buy that)
3. Cardinals (20% – didn’t I just read that they are still trying to find space for him??)
4. Reds (15% – I know they’ve said no… but still not buying anything until the deal is done)
5. Red Sox (5% – I just think if he had any interest in coming to Boston, he’d have done it already)

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

by AlohaSox on Feb 22, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Well ok, I'll give you Wilson

I think Pujols was a pretty big surprise for most everyone though. They already had a DH and 2 first basemen (Trumbo and Morales) and a lot of money committed. I remember it seeming like it was going to be either the Marlins or Cards, and I didn’t think too many saw the Angels coming

Pujols to the Angles surprised me

Okay, yeah... that's probably fair enough.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

I agree mostly on the Angels being surprise.....

Except that Trumbo had a sub 300 OBP last year and Morales has more or less missed two complete seasons. So it is not crazy that they would go after a 1B.

But fun...

… if only for the Halofans’ attempts to rationalize why spending extravagantly and having bandwagon fans is suddenly okay – a proposition presumably only applied to teams named the Los Angeles Something Or Others, but not actually located in Los Angeles city or county.

Okay, once was creepy...

… but the second one is just mean.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

I was going to say... isn't Bowden the one that said he had a deal with Saint Louis...

… pending a physical?? Or was that with the Rangers? Or was it someone else that tweeted that.

At this point, I’m not holding my breath for anything to happen at all.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

Nah, Jim Duquette

and he posted they were close to a deal but the Sox and Astros were in the mix

by wolf9309 on Feb 22, 2012 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like a reasonable report.

Bowden isn’t just speculating here, he has a source. He’s pretty good with reports that don’t involve his BFF Scott Boras, and even if he got this from Boras somehow, it wouldn’t benefit Boras to leak falsely that a player would make a decision soon. Add that to the fact that it’s reasonable to believe he’ll make a decision tomorrow, and this passes the smell test for me.

Be pretty huge if Boston got him, but I’m resigned to having merely a very good team in a tough division.

by abbreviatedman on Feb 22, 2012 8:53 PM EST reply actions

I managed to confuse Bowden with Heyman.

But if you ignore the “BFF Boras” stuff, the rest of it still stands.

by abbreviatedman on Feb 22, 2012 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

If he makes his decision tomorrow

it almost has to be the Red Sox. I think they are the only team with an offer on the table, and neither texas nor St. Louis has cleared money.

by Bososx13 on Feb 22, 2012 8:54 PM EST reply actions

That's what I'm thinking.

Trying not to get my hopes up, but that’s what I’m thinking.

by abbreviatedman on Feb 22, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I feel it bodes well for the Red Sox if he is a decision tomorrow

Just don’t see him making a decision so soon.

Probably going to the Cards anyway. Not getting my hopes up.

Has he been hanging out with Brett Favre?

Maybe he has been discussing the merits of skipping that whole preseason foolishness with him.

On a similar note...

… I was thinking he was teammates with Clemens when he started that thing where he’d come back mid-season and get paid like a starter for the full season. Maybe Oswalt thinks that’s a good system?

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

ESPN reports (in their "Rumor Central" section)...

… there was some indication during the day that the Sox were “back in the mix” for Oswalt. If so, I figure ESPN was reporting either: (a) the ripples around Oswalt and the Sox agreeing; or (b) the ripples surrounding Oswalt shopping an offer to the Sox and the Sox declining.

Who knows?
