Roy Oswalt thread
Let's have this be the Roy Oswalt thread. A lot of times, I think to myself, if he was really going to pitch in Boston, why hasn't he signed with the Sox yet, but then I also think, who will he sign with then? Last time I heard, the Sox have the only offer to him on the table. The Cardinals want him, but don't have the money, same with the Rangers, the Reds have been mentioned a lot, but their GM has said over and over again they have had no talks with him. I thought the Phillies had a chance, but it doesn't look like it. Who do you think he will sign with? Or will he even sign with anyone? Will he wait until the spring training games start? Will he wait until the middle of the season, and hope teams start a bidding war for him? Or will he sign with the Sox, Cardinals or Rangers?

He's going to go to the Rangers as soon as they find room/funding for him.
They may have to trade off one of their pieces first or wait for someone to be injured to DL, but they’ll follow it up by signing RO.
Whether it’s geographical or something else, we have to deal with the fact that RO simply hates the idea of playing for the Red Sox.
Basically any southern midwest team that wants him in ST
Wish he’d come here, or if not here Detroit, that way I could yell at him when I go to Comerica.

Yeah, I think either the Rangers... or the first Southern team that loses a pitcher in ST.
You know… the injury bug is going to bite someone, they’ll need a starter, and they’ll be closer to his home than the Sox (and won’t put him facing the DH and the AL East line ups).
Sadly, I don’t think I want Oswalt anymore because I just don’t see the competitive fire in him, since he’s looking for the easiest, closest to home option (ie. NL Central Cardinals, or the Rangers with the parks in the AL West…)
Of course, if he signs with Boston, I’ll become his biggest cheerleader around here.
BLAAAAAAAAAARGH OMFG SIGN STARTERS!!!!!!!!
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
I think you need to change your mantra
Should be BLAAAAAARGH OMFG TRADE FOR STARTERS
The only decent free agent starter left doesn’t want to come here.

Fair enough. So frustrating.

I'm not sure...
… if you mean that Marino was grown in a lab which has permitted him to be so effective for so long, or if you’re referring to the Yankees’ secret practice since of heartlessly murdering Rivera at the end of each year and replacing him with a clone of 1997 Mo, implanted with the original’s memories.
Either way, yes.

Yes, it is.
However, when comparing Texas’ hitter friendly park to Fenway, that’s probably a wash. When comparing Safeco, the Oakland Coliseum, Kauffman and even the Angels’ stadium to Camden Yards, New Mordor and the types of line ups in the AL East… the AL West is a much easier destination for a pitcher.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Nonetheless, if he was particularly looking for "easy"
Texas would not be a destination. We’re talking pitching half his games at home run heaven.
he IS looking to rebuild value however, and obviously the AL East isn’t exactly a smart place to do that. I would say that the fact that he’s shown interest in midwest contenders shows that competitive fire is there.
I don't understand why he told Detroit "no"
it’s closer to home than Boston, and is the closest thing he’ll get to Safeco east of the Mississippi.

You've obviously never been there
downtown Detroit is shit, but there’s a lot of really nice lakefront property no too far from Comerica.

Which is an interesting point...
… he hasn’t come out and said “no” to Boston yet… why is that?
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
I think it's because
he wouldn’t mind it but would prefer Texas or St. Louis. That’s why I think he’ll sign with the Sox because from a lot of sources, the Sox have the only offer on the table. I think at the end of the offseason if he doesn’t have an offer from Texas or St. Louis, he’ll sign with the Sox.
Honestly, I don't think so.
In my head, I answered this question as soon as I asked it… saying “no” to Boston removes any negotiation leverage he has. Now, he can still point to Boston as a possibility.
However, I really do believe he is waiting to see whether any rotations lose a piece in Spring Training, like the Cardinals lost Wainwright last year. I have a hard time envisioning him ending up in Boston, and it’s beginning to sound like Boston really thinks we have a rotation: Lester/Beckett/Buchholz/Bard/Doubront.
That’s simply scary to me.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

I haven't seen something like this go on before
Almost every time, if a team wants it done and the player wants it done, ESPECIALLY a player of talent like Oswalt, it gets done well before pitchers and catchers report. I think if he were going to settle, it would have happened by now. Which is why I don’t think he plans on settling, will be happy to continue to use Boston as leverage and take a 1 year $5M deal on which ever team in the south is willing to pay him that and try again next year.

@WadePSU
Keep in mind, he pitched most of his career in Minute Maid Park.
I don’t think he sees the Ballpark at Arlington as any worse than that… but the level of competition, the road ballparks he goes to in the AL West, and they’ve played in back to back World Series… so, to me… that’s the easier route than Boston.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
And he is on the team with the most terrifying lineup in the West
Angels are certainly closer now with Pujols, but if I had to pick which one I’d face, I’d rather face the Angels.

And TBH
As good as CJ Wilson was last year, Oswalt overall is probably better. The team hasn’t changed a whole lot other than that, and Beltre won’t be hurt.
Darvish (if he performs) and Oswalt make that team the best in the league, just ahead of the Tigers.

He'll either sign with us or not...
I don’t really care either way anymore. There are certain things I’m excited about with our team this year…. but I just don’t have the give a damn left to worry about starters.
But, yannow, BLAAAAAAAAAARGH OMFG SIGN STARTERS!!!!!!!!

Way is proximity important to him?
I get that he wants to be close to home but how often do you get a chance to go in the majors and I don’t see him driving.
apparently his hometown is in proximity
that his dad used to drive to every start in st. louis.
you get a chance pretty often in the majors if you’re the 12th most valuable starter in the majors in the last 6 years. He’s a very, very good starter, not some guy who’s looking for another shot at the big show.
Saint Louis or KC

I'm surprised I haven't heard more about KC, actually.

"It just doesn’t fit," he said. "For me, we would be abandoning our plan with the young players. That’s not who we are. I think it’s important that we understand who we are, where we’re going and what we’re trying to do.
"Abandoning that (approach), and precluding any of those young pitchers from being in our rotation, is doing just that."
- Dayton Moore, from this article on why he hasn’t pursued Oswalt
and of course, I have to imagine
that they probably would’ve taken Oswalt over trading for Jonathan Sanchez (who, at $5.6 million, probably costs more than Oswalt would’ve and is fairly terrible)
Wow...
Yeah, that’s an interesting hindsight to look at. They could still have Melky, and would have Oswalt instead of Sanchez.
Ouch.
Of course, Kansas City is a bit further west than Saint Louis, so the drive from Mississippi wouldn’t be as pleasant (as someone that’s driven that stretch of road more than a few times… might only be three hours or so, but it’s a LONG three hours.)
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Sox could REALLY use him.
The ~2 wins he adds to the team are huge, could easily be the difference between making the playoffs and sitting at home. Sox should really open the pocketbook if he can be had for a one-year deal, even with a 40% tax on it.

At this point, I'm not putting it on the Sox.
I think Oswalt knows we’d pay him what he wants, but he’s hoping for a better fit somewhere else.

56% ?!
56% of voters believe that Oswalt will end up with the team he’s rebuffed the entire offseason? I could understand maybe a plurality, but a majority? I really don’t see it happening at this point.

Don't think it's too unreasonable
He’s been waiting it out, hoping something would work out with one of his more desired locations. Nobody has seen anything from Texas or St. Louis that indicates any change in their positions, and spring training is beginning… if we’re in the business of guessing, Boston is not a bad guess.
Sure, but only if you think he doesn't have preferences
… but we know he does.
In all honesty, I think the Sox might have pulled their offer by now.

I think the Sox can effectively be ruled out of this now.
He’s going to join a team midseason. He could join us this very instant if he wanted to, he would rather take half the money, maybe even a quarter of what we might be offering him and wait until a team of his choice has an opening.
