Brian Butterfield Named Red Sox' Third Base Coach

Another piece of the Boston coaching staff is in place, and once again, he's coming from Toronto

The Red Sox brought along yet another piece from the Toronto coaching staff, as Brian Butterfield has been named the club's new third base coach. Butterfield replaces Jerry Royster, who took over the spot from Tim Bogar for the 2012 season.

Butterfield has been with Toronto for a while now, pre-dating Farrell there. Butterfield became the team's bench coach back in 2007, and then went on to be the third base coach once more starting with the 2010 campaign. He was also one of those interviewed for the manager job in the following off-season, before the job went to Farrell.

The 54-year-old Butterfield is a Bangor, Maine native, and a former minor-league player. He's also the son of former New York Yankees vice president in charge of scouting and development, Jack Butterfield. Brian Butterfield spent four seasons in the Yankees' farm system, before moving on to the Padres in 1983. That was his final year in the pros, as the 25-year-old Butterfield never did much hitting in the minors.

He became a roving infield instructor for New York right after that, though, so he already has significant coaching experience over the last 30 years or so. He managed Yankees' farm teams from 1988 through 1990, then again in 1992, with a second stint as infield instructor in between. He was part of the Yankees' big-league coaching staff in the mid-90s, before moving to the Diamondbacks in 1996. He was their third base coach from 1999 through 2000, before going back to New York once more to serve as a minor-league manager yet again.

His dismissal there led to his arrival in Toronto in 2002, and the start of an 11-year relationship with the Blue Jays that officially ends today with his introduction to the Red Sox.
