The Red Sox will talk to Dodgers' third base coach Tim Wallach for their open manager position.

The Red Sox wanted to interview Tim Wallach for their manager job last off-season, but the Dodgers denied Boston, citing a deadline for interviews in the coach's contract. This year, though, the manager search is happening much earlier, and Wallach -- now the Dodgers third base coach -- will interview with Boston early next week.

Wallach, a first-round pick in the 1979 draft, played from 1980 through 1996, starting with the Expos -- who he played with through 1991 -- and then headed to the Dodgers for three years. Wallach also played 57 games with the California Angels in 1996, before he was cut loose and signed with the Dodgers once more.

Third base coach isn't his first go-round in the dugout, as he was the Dodgers' hitting coach from 2004 through 2005, and was the manager of the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes in 2009 and 2010. When the Isotopes set a franchise record for wins, Wallach was named PCL manager of the year. Before the 2011 season, he was named the Dodgers' third base coach, and has been in that role since.

As a player, Wallach made five all-star teams, won three Gold Gloves, and received Most Valuable Player votes in three seasons. From 1982 through 1990, Wallach posted a 111 OPS+ with Montreal, a stretch in which all of those all-star appearances took place.
