Edes: Red Sox To Hire Former Angels' Scouting Director Eddie Bane

Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Red Sox are adding a former scouting director to their front office, one who selected Mike Trout in the draft.

It's no secret the Red Sox wanted to add veteran talent evaluators to their front office this winter, the first full off-season in which Ben Cherington is the club's general manager. Gordon Edes is reporting that Boston is hiring Eddie Bane, who has a long history of scouting work, as part of this initiative.

Bane was a scout for the Tigers following his firing in Anaheim, but he'll now be a special assistant to the GM in Boston. That's that same title Jason Varitek received in his recent hiring.

If you're wondering why there's a Mike Trout image associated with this news, it's because Bane is the scouting director who selected Trout back in the 2009 draft with the 25th pick. Trout isn't his only success, though: he also picked Mark Trumbo, Peter Bourjos, signed international free agent Kendrys Morales, and, when he was working for the Dodgers, Paul Konerko.

Bane pitched back in the 70s for the Minnesota Twins, but not for very long thanks to arm trouble. He became a scout with the Indians in 1984, and stuck with them through 1987 before moving on to the Dodgers. He was Chuck Lamar's Special Assistant for the Devil Rays from 1999 through 2003, when they selected players like Josh Hamilton, Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, and B.J. Upton in the draft, and became the Angels' scouting director in 2004. That lasted until 2010, when then-general manager Tony Reagins fired Bane. Supposedly, it was because Reagins wasn't pleased with the last three drafts. No wonder Reagins blocked up the outfield by acquiring Vernon Wells and his terrible contract.

Boston's scouting and talent evaluation were already strong, but getting someone like Bane -- and whoever else they hire -- in before the 2013 draft, in which they have a top-10 pick for the first time in 20 years is a plus.
