OTM Open Thread- NFL Playoff Edition.

My last Open Thread was knocked off the board a while ago, so I'm putting this one up. The NFL playoffs have officially started, and for the first time since '99, my Detroit Lions are in the playoffs. They're being set up for failure though, taking on my preseason pick for the Super Bowl, the New Orleans Saints.

Who are you rooting for OTM? I know not all of you are New England fans, so who is everyone getting behind?

I'm rooting for

some beefy guys carrying an oblong ball that break out into funny dances when they run into a set area and act like they conquered the world when they actually do their job.

as you can tell – I’m not much of a football guy

Patriots, of course.

But the way they’re playing on defense (Giving up 21 points before scoring a single point ain’t gonna win it, folks) my suspicion is that the Saints are going to take the whole thing this year. Of course, if the Patriots ARE in the Super Bowl, I won’t be allowed to watch it. The two times I’ve watched the SB when the Pats were in it… they’ve managed to lose. (’86 against the Bears and then that undefeated season where that game was the only game I got to watch all year long….)

Of course...

New Orleans is now making me eat my words…

Shush, don't jinx it.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

See, what happened here

is that I turned the game off. Soon as I do, NO takes the lead. Coincidence? I think not!

by Rick Bentsen on Jan 7, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

I think they looked less good

and our defense looked shit. The line was getting held all night (but what else is new?) and the secondary dropped some huge possible interceptions. Here’s hoping Detroit picks up a decent corner or two in the draft.

These two match ups tonight have been tough.

All teams I don’t wish ill upon. Been waiting for Houston to take the next step for years, they finally do with half their stars injured all year, the Bengals were a bit of a surprise but I always like to see rookies succeed which Dalton and Green have done. Love Brees but also hugely impressed with Stafford. I didn’t know he went over 5000/40. In just about ANY other year in the history of the NFL he’d be MVP, this year he may be barely in the top 5 (Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Newton, Rice, McCoy all also having standout years one way or another, not to say he’s behind all of them).

I am Sandy's bitch.

Don't forget Calvin in that MVP conversation

I’d say Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Stafford, Calvin, Rice, although Rice and Calvin could be flipped either way.

For some reason, I just can't include a reciever in MVP talk.

My mind just doesn’t allow it. Calvin had a great year, but I’d rather take all of his votes and attribute them to Stafford. In a case where a receiver has a total, pardon the expression, Lackey, throwing him the ball and he puts up huge numbers, I think he deserves it. But when your guy tosses 3500 yards and 25 TDs to other guys too, I want the QB to get credit.

I am Sandy's bitch.

Fair enough.

I take it you feel the same way about Gronkowski?

Gronkowski

is a beast. I’m soooooooooo glad he’s a Patriot….

I'm pretty happy with Pettigrew, #3 TE in the league.

For real, three 5000 yard QBs.

Manning was almost in the club too.

doesn't mean you can't score

it’s just more like kicking an extra point than scoring a touchdown.

OK, so LSU and Alabama split; one at Alabama, one at a neutral site. It seems Tiger Stadium needs one to break the tie.

))<>((

by German Red Sox Fan on Jan 10, 2012 3:23 PM EST reply actions

i would say the packers are the favorites to go all the way

1 packers
2 saints
3 patriots
4 ravens
5 giants
6 ravens
7 49ers
8 broncos
thats my opinion on the remaining teams. but i hope i am wrong go pats !

by brady12mvp3 on Jan 10, 2012 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

That's about exactly the way I would rank them too.

Except maybe I wouldn’t even bother listing the Giants, I hate the Giants.

i hate the giants more then any team in sports

but they are hot right now and gulp that crappy eli is a clutch qb.

by brady12mvp3 on Jan 10, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

49ers are higher as NFC #2 seed than 7th out of 8.

I’d also put the Patriots above the Saints because the Saints would have to likely win at Green Bay to make the Super Bowl if they even get past the higher-rated 49ers. The Patriots don’t have as difficult an impending opponent as the Saints – a southern dome team traveling in January to play at Green Bay.

by dsharp on Jan 12, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

I would say that Any of the 49ers, Saints, or Packers have a better shot than the Pats.

The NFC was the just the better conference this year.

agreed

Big Pats fan, and they just haven’t been very good this year, apart from Brady and the tight ends.

by wolf9309 on Jan 12, 2012 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

I did not know there were two teams named the Ravens in the NFL.

Missing the Texans. Who I actually think may be underrated. Solid defense and a great running game to control the clock with. You also don’t need the best QB in the world when you can let Andre Johnson go up and get it.

The Ravens are very capable of putting up a clunker, even at home. That is my pick for upset of the weekend. Hate the Giants too much to even contemplate them winning anything. SF just does not have the consistency they need on offense. Bronco’s can’t handle Welker, Gronk, and Hernadez.

by upCHUCK on Jan 14, 2012 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

well as a big pats fan that will be going to the game tomorrow

the pats have a better chance at winning it all because of the afc is weaker then the nfc less good teams to beat them. saints are going to shred the 49ers.
