Our former #1 hitting prospect now appears to be headed back into Theo's clutches. Clever, Theo. Very clever.

So I guess this puts the debate on who won the AGon trade to rest

traded for an often injured possible long reliever. Not a great haul for a guy who was one of the cornerstones in the AGon trade.

Red Sox made out like bandits on this trade.

Not so hot.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

Obviously Boston won this deal...

… however, what’s going on with San Deigo?

Theo and Jed Hoyer clearly valued Rizzo, and the best deal the Padres could get for him was this? Not only did we win the original trade, but this certainly looks to me like Theo/Jed got a prospect they love back in their system for a lot less than the Padres paid for him.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til next year!

Padres rushed him to the Show, and then were shocked his first 200 ABs as a 21-year-old straight out of AA sucked.

That they’d trade him for Cashner…that’s more a condemnation of Byrnes than Rizzo.

or it could be looked in this way:

padres trade agon for kelly, alonso, fuentes. then trade latos for cashner, grandal and volquez.

Ironically, Fuentes may come out

looking like the best part of that deal for the Pads

Highly doubt it.

Gonzo was traded twice as a prospect too

If you consider how their respective numbers were identical in AA (Both played for Portland), it’s likehistory repeating itself again :)

The reason they traded low

is that they had to trade one of him or Alonso.

It’s weird that the trade market appears to work this way, but you do appear to lose a lot of leverage when you trade from a logjam.

The real mistake, then, would be the Padres specifically deciding to trade for a prospect that would create a logjam. They should have known that they were essentially trading not for Alonso but for a prospect of Cashner’s lower quality. (Plus the potential upgrade of Alonso over Rizzo, but that’s debatable.)

Olney has some interesting tidbits in his article today

Saying how some people thought that not only was Rizzo overmatched at the MLB level, but that his swing was so bad he couldn’t even get around on a 90 MPH fastball against righties. Olney goes on to say that Theo, Hoyer, and some others thought he just got into bad habits when he was called up.

If Byrnes, et. al. thought that Rizzo’s value was never going to rebound, though, it makes sense to deal him now, even at a somewhat low point.

Strange

If they really thought he couldn’t hit 90mph then how did he hit so well in AA? It’s not like everyone is throwing 82 mph meatballs down there. It is a pro baseball league. Sounds like Theo just fleeced an overmatched GM.

It would be quite hilarious

If Rizzo winds up back with the Sox as part of the whatever compensation package is worked out for Theo.
