 !!! OTM Fantasy Baseball 2012 !!!

Ok, so last year I posted something, wanting to get involved for the first time. BZ was kind enough to organize and allow me to enter, and it was a blast. I truly enjoyed it very much, and wanted to toss it out there to see what the plans are, or will be for this coming season. I figured we could all figure it out here in this post, and come to a consensus what everyone wants to do.

PS: I'm going to repeat.

I need to point out, I am not offering to be the commissioner

I have no idea how to do that or whats involved. I was (am) hoping BZ does it again, but he said he might not, so I figured I would make this post and we can all discuss it.

I've been commissioner of many leagues.

And if BZ isn’t interested in running the show this year, I’d be happy to do it.

Starts limit is the way to go – that way you can have a ton of SP but you have to really consider who is going to take up your 7 or 8 starts for the week.

Yeah, I wasn't prepared for how awesome starting pitching was for the league

Not against it, mind you, but after I won my first few weekly matchups I kinda went on cruise control until about halfway through the season, and at that point there wasn’t much left besides scraps and I was focusing on my other league more (which I ended up winning so I guess it was worth it) and turned in a not good season. I’d like to go in better prepared for sure.

Haven't been in one

But from my understanding, you get to select a designated number of players from your current roster and keep them for next year, the rest of your players go back into the draft pool.

Some leagues get pretty deep, like Xander Bogaerts is already sitting on their bench.

My thoughts

1. A lot of people wanted to play last year and it is very hard to decide who’s in who’s out. We tried splitting leagues which worked o.k. then ended up making a third roto-style league with the leftovers. I don’t really want to be the one to decide who is in which league, etc and I’m not sure there is a good answer that doesn’t leave someone left out

2. innings limits are kind of arbitrary, I like the starts limit (usually 7 or 8) that way you have to really decide on starting a questionable starter because he will take one of your starts. Plus you get to play matchups (i.e. do you sit an average pitcher against a good offense, etc.)

by BobZupcic on Jan 6, 2012 10:02 AM EST reply actions

I think deciding who is in is easier this year

I’d say people who did it last year get first dibs. After that, random selection of people who say they want in by a certain date (unless someone like Ben or Marc wants in, then they can have dibs). I think as long as we have a set deadline, it’s manageable.

even then we had two leagues

of 12 – we could make an uber league of 16 which changes the game in its own right or just keep the split

If we have split leagues one way to split them (I did random last year) would maybe be by post number or join date – kind of like a rookies league and veterans league

Just some thoughts

yeah I've always thought doing a ton of teams would be a lot more interesting

there’d be a lot more call for trades and the like, in my mind.

At the same time, I can understand that the game would become less interesting to follow if you were starting Daric Barton at first and there was no one out there to replace him.

I have found that it is starting pitching that really gets thin in big leagues.

Can usually stream position players on hot streaks at a position you are weak at.

OK

After a few minutes of thought – here is my suggestion (and I preface this with an apology to you new-timers). If I am to run a league, I’d like it to be the OTM “veterans” that are in it. The reasoning is pretty sound – If you have poured your blood, sweat and tears into making this site what is was/is then we deserve to be together and have our trash-talking outlet.

I would be for forming an OTM “Veterans” League

Again, this is not intended to be a slight against some of the new folks on this post or this site, but when I see names on here that I’ve never seen before in game threads and the like, I’m not inclined to want to play in a league with you guys even though I’m sure you are good people

Sorry if that is or sounds “elitist” but that;s how I feel

but a lot of the people who played weren’t really familiar faces.

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.

then take the winners from all 3 leagues, best record gets bye, faces winner of champions from leagues 2 and 3.

I’m sure there is absolutely no way to make that happen.

Well, we wouldn't be able to do it this year

I just couldn’t do basketball, because that would mean paying attention to the NBA.

Do-able

You wouldn’t be able to see head-head results online the way I’m thinking. All leagues would have to have exactly the same settings.

So you have regular seasons champs A, B, and C in order of record. All three go to their regularly scheduled league playoffs, whomever scores the most of B or C (they would have to report that back) would then compare playoff week 2 scores to champ A. The one with the highest points in their league playoff match that week gets crowned supreme champ.

Or you could do a round robin and start earlier, would be more fair.

I hope I can adjust to a league without Sandy

- I like H2H over Roto
- Yahoo! over CBS, but I’ve never tried ESPN and I’m not too picky
- I would like a legacy league if possible, carry over what teams we can year to year and it shows previous championships etc.
-Starters limit sounds good to me
-I liked the scoring from the Geldman league last year

Besides, he initially posted he didn’t want in because he needed time to write his novel. Not to mention, he quit on his team halfway through last year.

Well with starts limits

you can have as many pitchers as you want….but you only get to use so many of their starts….kinda best of both worlds.

I guess someone could just draft pitchers and house them of their bench to be a ninny but I doubt that’ll happen that much in a league where we can pretty much hang their clothes out to dry

Auction Draft is basically what it sounds like

Everyone has a payroll limit, then you bid on the players and have to fit them into your roster.

It’s fun but as BZ said, it can take a long time. I do enjoy a smaller league where everyone can get together in person for an auction draft. Those are great.

In one league I’m in, we have only 4 keepers. Most people change some of their keepers from year to year.

"Man you are one pathetic loser. No offense." - Lloyd Christmas

by Lloyd Christmas on Jan 10, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah you could come up with lots of rules regarding keepers

For example:
- Your only allowed to keep players drafted after a certain round (eg 8th Round) or picked up as Free Agent.
- Your only allowed a limited number of Keepers
- Your keepers move faster up in the Draft Rounds ( in the league i play in you keep a guy you drafted in round 10 in round 9 next year. That means you dont have a pick in round 9 and automatically get that in round 9. You could say each keeper jumps 2 or maybe even 3 rounds each year)

))<>((

by German Red Sox Fan on Jan 10, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

That would be interesting, you can only keep a certain number of free agents you pick up

Say Lavarnway, he may not be drafted, but he would be a guy you might pick up in July and in 2013 he may be a 10 top catcher.

So we have quite some interest in a keeper league, great!

I’d be willing to run the league. First we need to find out if the veteran league is run as a keeper league or whether the keeper league is an aditional league. Either solution is fine by me, i’m prolly only playing one league though. So some quick questions need to be answered:
1. Is everyone from the veteran league interested in the Keeper/Dynasty format and wants that league played as such? Please have in mind that I really only want to play with people interested in playing multiple seasons. So could everyone from this List please answer that question:

gizmo
BZ
Boldandbrash
wolf
Bloggy
Rogue
TLD – gave his spot to me if there a no objections
nuthin
Sologlub
dsharp
kraken613
SCG
revived0103
Lloyd Christmas
Upchuck
Marisa

2. would you be willing to pay for that league? I really prefer the CBS commisioner league which costs 179$ which is 14.99 in a 12 Team league but also has some great advantages. Here is a link:
http://baseball.cbssports.com/splash/baseball/spln/mgmt

The only pay leagues I'm in

are with people I know, and have face to face relationships with. Even then, those are for cash prizes, played in free formats.

I'm not interested in a pay-league

I’ve never played a keeper league before. How does that work?

It's pretty simple.

Every team can keep a predetermined number of players from the previous year. In this league, keeping players would start next year.

I see.

Well, I enjoy the draft is the thing. I get a big ol’ glass of bourbon or something and make a night of ‘er. If all the good players are snatched up because everyone kept ’em…that’d kinda be too bad.

Although I roll with the majority.

I like the keeper idea

never done that before. Would prefer not to pay, but whatever.

I'm down for keeper

Would rather not pay though, just not a fan of CBS, I didn’t enjoy their league a couple years ago, found the whole UI to be a little confusing. For me it goes Yahoo —> ESPN -→ CBS.

I am Sandy's bitch.

Looks good to me, yes

I’ll also agree that spending money is not optimal.

I want to join one

I would prefer a yahoo league. They have innings limits if necessary.

BZ, could you come up with a followup post, listing interested parties and potential plans? Looks like theres a lot to sift through here.

by dennet on Jan 14, 2012 10:13 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Actually,

they did. I run a league in Yahoo, and have used the weekly innings limit over the last couple of seasons.

My bad

You’re correct. I read, and responded incorrectly. There are innings minimums, no limits. My apologies.

answer the following question: Are you interested in the Keeper/Dynasty format and want the veteran league played as such? Please have in mind that I really only want to play with people interested in playing multiple seasons!

Totally fine with a multi-year keeper league.

I’m just afraid that after multiple years of spankings from Sandy, I might get to like it.

We should all have a pact...

… to give the league permission to edit our SBN profile if we quit.

Haha

I love it. I hate playing with people who quit mid-season, or never do anything after the draft…

by BHeebs on Jan 17, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Thats one big advantage of a keeper league

Even when you are out of the playoff race you can enjoy the rest of the season. Then go into “rebuild” mode and trade your win now players for younger keepers. Kinda like in real baseball. That should keep motivation high!
