OTM Fantasy Baseball-post 2

Alright tomorrow is February 1st! Only a couple weeks away from all 3.5 of our pitchers, and of course the catchers reporting.

I know we talked in the other post about setting up in Feb, draft in March. Just wanted to create this fanpost to start the discussion again on what the plans are. Very excited for baseball, and very excited for more fantasy excitement-fantasy baseball that is.

What's the game plan my friends?

Is there a waiting list for anyone that drops out of the league?

by Justin_Bobo on Jan 31, 2012 8:49 PM EST reply actions

I like the ideas set forth so far.

Moving to an ESPN league to limit the number of starts by SP’s, upping the # of teams to 16, and making this a keeper league.

Three questions I have:

1. Do the stats stay the same as last year?

2. How many keepers per team?

3. Do we still have a weekly move limit since we now have a cap on SP’s?

Thoughts?

so back

Yeah that are some issues we have to talk about. I mean anything is possible. I definitely prefer a format where we can limit starts oder innings pitched.

I'm planning to run the Mirabelli League again this year.

Missed the earlier discussion, so I don’t think we had the same issues with pitcher streaming in our stat set up, and we ran a lot differently than the Varitek and Gedman leagues.

I’ll send an email out to the managers from last year, and see how many are coming back, and whether we make the same changes suggested above.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

by AlohaSox on Jan 31, 2012 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Did you run a points league,

or did you use categories? Category H2H leagues don’t have the same issues with SP’s(usually).

We ran category head to head, 5x5.

I’d have to pull it up again to see what it was. I remember we through Cycles and No HItters up there as “bonus” categories, so we had a ton of ties as a result. It was fun, though, to get the bonus point when you had the right guy in your line up.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

I play in all types of leagues,

but my favorite are category H2H leagues. Although, I’m not a big fan of bonus categories like no hitters, grand slams, etc. I don’t like losing because of dumb luck. But, to each his own.

Ha ha ha!

Well, in the grand scheme of things, I doubt anyone “lost” a week due to the bonus category, nor do I think it cost anyone the playoffs.

I remember way back when Fantasy Baseball first hit the online realm, and there was a system where you earned like 30 points for a No Hitter (and 20 for a CGSO)… I honestly haven’t played points in so long, but I liked getting the bump when a guy went way above just a complete game.

Sounds like that might be the way points leagues are set up… but like I said, been running the head to head category league so long, I’d really forgotten about points.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Wait ’til THIS year!

We kicked around keeper last time, so I'll put it to a league vote via email.

We’ll see how many folks are coming back this season (a good indication on the likelihood of a keeper league going forward too), and how many want to play that way. We discussed it last year after the draft, and I think it may shift the draft strategy a little, so needs to be decided before we draft in 2012.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

This (as a person who did that).

I prefer it being Fantasy Baseball not Fantasy Maximization of Variables Converted to a Point System. I’m not sure how it would work, but I’d like something in the system which would roughly reflect the fact that when you play without a 3B, you’ll probably lose. I’m not sure how that would work, though. A stiff penalty for a day without someone slotted at each fielding position? Innings cap?

Starts limits

Each team has a limit of 7-8 starts per competition week. You can run with as many pitchers as you like, but once those starts are eaten up, you get no more stats for starters. This way you have to play your match-ups and a two-week set by say Verlander eats up two starts – which is not really a bad thing. Basically if you end up with 0 pts or even -5 pts for a start its a lost cause and you can’t just filter in another dude to make up for it.

This makes me happy...

there was a huge problem with the way our league used points to determine who wins

you just figured it out before most of us and I had no real other choice then the try and beat you at your own game. I still think if I had my best pitcher I would have won. MIssing 3 Josh Johnson starts in the finals killed me.

I wasn't in the Mirabelli League last year, just the Varitek. But if they don't return, I'll take it.

There was some confusion because someone in Mirabelli used my exact team name I had in Varitek – “Donald’s Ducks”

I’d change the team name if I get in to avoid confusion. I’d prefer not do keeper simply because I have no idea if that team has anyone worth keeping, but I’ll go along if everyone wants it.

Something to be said for this.

I won an NBA Fantasy League my first or second season playing, mostly because I lucked into Rondo in his first really strong season (and I got him mostly because the other Celtics had all gone off the board before I could draft them and I wanted at least one).

Of course, I know next to nothing about the NBA, so winning a fantasy basketball league was more than a little bizarre. I missed last season’s registration (so I must have won the 2009-2010 campaign?) so I’m “defending” my title this season, and getting destroyed week in and week out. No idea what I’m doing, but tried a little harder to get some knowledge.

Then again, maybe the fact that I drafted Rondo again, and he’s been out so long with that wrist injury, is a contributing factor. (I also got Paul Pierce, and his time missed early in the season hurt my team too.)

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Ha ha ha!

Thanks… I actually have a buddy here in Honolulu that’s a big NBA guy, so he helped me line up my draft (Kevin Love, David West, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo) and it’s a center heavy league, so I filled that up pretty well.

However, it’s like the lack of knowledge I had the first time around played in my favor (I didn’t hang onto guys that were hurt or underperforming, and often just grabbed the hot hand off waivers) and now I’ve got an expert whispering in my ear (and as a co-manager, so he can see the waiver wire too)… and I’m getting waxed 2-11 this week, and in the bottom four of a 12 team league. 14 team league? Might be 14.

Relating to the OTM vs. PSA contest

Lord Duggan on PSA suggested doing it like this:

Spitballing here, but might it be possible to introduce the concept of PSA vs. OTM? So, if there’s 16 teams and you come in first, that’s 16 points for OTM, I come in second so that’s 15 points for PSA, and so on.

Which I like, as it gives more emphasis on the “team” aspect and also more incentive to pick the best players for the contest.

That said, I am not qualified to judge everyone’s fantasy baseball skill, so we could either vote or have someone who is decide who should be on the team. Our current interest roster is:

AlohaSox
Gizmosandy
Lloyd Christmas
Marisa
Sologub

I believe the idea was to have mirrored rules between the 2 leagues? I personally prefer H2H Categories over Points.

And there were technically three leagues last year...

… though perhaps since I was such a lousy commissioner, the Mirabelli League wasn’t recognized officially. We ran a head to head categories style, so I’m not sure the leagues all have to have the same set up.

I reached out to the managers in Mirabelli to determine what we wanted to count, which works as long as you do it before the draft. We’ll probably tweak a few things for 2012.

I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

I like the keeper idea however

I am in a league with people that were not in my league from last season. Will I be able to keep certain players that may have been on another team in a diffrent league as well as my team? The H2H points and SP limit are hand in hand. Either you have the points h2h with a limit or have catagories with no SP limit. With catagories it will hurt you just as much as help you by streaming SP into you starting lineup. While catagories like Starts and K’s may be effected by massive amounts of SP your WHIP/ERA/ K:BB/ L could all be negitive from it. I just would also like to point out that there are more catagories to use then the standard 9. I played in a league last season where we use 20 cats.

I think the concept is you start the keeper format this year.

We kicked this around in our league as well, last year… I think you have to decide the keeper role before the draft, as it can change your draft strategy.

Question for all keeper league managers

In the other fanpost I asked whether everybody was cool with the keeper idea for the veterans league. The question was aked on Jan 11. 2 guys havent answered yet: kraken and dsharp . I think if you cant answer a question in a month you seem unfit to participate in a (hopefully) very active keeper league.

So those participating in the keeper league. Do you agree with kicking those 2 and replacing them with someone else?

So since we wanna get the ball rolling we need to make some decisions regarding plattform, rules, number of keepers etc.

But lets get organized and do one after the other. I think the general concensus is a h2h points league with daily lineup changes and weekly matchups. (protest if you disagree)

So the first question is:

1. Do you want to play with a restriction on Innings Pitched / Number of Starts per week?

Why is that the first question? If the answer is yes we might be limited to a specific platform. Last year it was not possible to limit starts of IP on yahoo. So if playing on yahoo is more important than the limit in IP is, you might wanna vote no.

My take

1. I prefer Yahoo.

However, I’ll play on either site, with just about any settings. As long as you don’t add luck based stats(no hitters, grand slams, hit for the cycle, etc…), or go to weekly lineup changes, I’m good.

Question number 2 is draft date.

I think an online snake draft is pretty much the general consesus (protest in reply if you disagree).
The Season starts Wednesday March 28th. I think the first week of H2H play will therefor be a long week (March 28th to April 8th). (I’d multiply limited number of start/ip by 1.5 and round that number up if XX.5)

So i think the draft should be in the Week before start of the season. So we have a good timeframe from Friday March 16th to Sunday March 25th.

2a) please name dates you can attend the online draft
2b) prefered draft start time in EST (keep in mind a draft takes somewhere between 1.5 to 3 hours)

The 17th is St. Patrick's Day.

2a) In turn the 16th or 17th will probably not be that great for some of us in the states (including myself). In general would prefer not to do Fridays or Saturdays.

2b) Any weekday after 5:30pm. Sundays any time after noon.

I would prefer a Friday or a Saturday so i can just go to bed after the draft. But i understand that Fridays and Saturdays are evenings on which you dont want to spend you time doing a fantasy draft. A sunday seems like the best day of the week to do it and with 1.5 months notice ppl should be able to attend, if they wanna play in a highly active and competitive league.

Just to make it official - kraken and dsharp

kraken and dsharp, you guys havent answered the question whether you want to participate in the veterans keeper league or not in over a month. Your silence might have been some form of agreement. Anyway I’ll give you a 3 day deadline untill sunday 12 am (is noon 12 am or pm? I’ll always forget. why do you count 12 hours twice anyway? the day has 24 hour so count to 24, silly americans ;) ) . If you dont answer within these 3 days you will be replaced by someone else. Do we a waiting list?

does that mean that Roman legions took 5.28 ft steps? I’m picturing a legion of not-particularly-tall people doing that, and in my head, it looks a lot like Monty Python’s ministry of silly walks.

But shouldn’t he have the opportunity to be in one of the “main” leagues? I think he only started the Mirabelli League after all the spots had been taken in the Gedman and Varitek leagues.

Just setup a league on the 2012 Yahoo

no pitching limits on starts or innings – only innings minimum – same as last year

by BobZupcic on Feb 9, 2012 8:42 PM EST reply actions

So I guess the question is, is it worth it to switch to ESPN for starts limits

Or is it better to tweak the stats to make the pitchers less valuable, if that’s even possible considering the pitcher streaming tactic.

by Sologub on Feb 9, 2012 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

The way I figure

even if you lessen the stats for pitchers you will still have streaming just to accumulate points and if one person does it everyone will naturally join in. I guess you could severely limit bench spots, but then you hurt the flexibility. The only other option would be to make sure a bad start really hurt – like serious negative points so the chancy pitchers wouldn’t get used as much.

With all that said, I really like ESPN better anyway and don’t see the big deal switching over when we can handle this problem easily

by BobZupcic on Feb 9, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

hate that idea

is it possible to specify the amount of pitching bench spots and position bench spots separately? That could make streaming less appealing as you’d have to drop a pitcher to pick up a pitcher. I want a league where it doesn’t make any sense for someone to be fielding a team without a shortstop (for example). That’s my main priority.

by wolf9309 on Feb 9, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

Assuming we use ESPN

Will the limits on weekly acquisitions still be in place? Since starts will have a cap, do we need weekly move limits?

Just go with ESPN

I prefer Yahoo, but to limit streaming, ESPN seems to be the way to go. Marisa is the only one who really hates the idea of using ESPN. She’ll just have to get over her hang up, and join the majority. Maybe the OTM vs. PSA league can use Yahoo, but from reading the comments on PSA, they seem to prefer ESPN as well.

If Yahoo isnt offering limiting starts its just not the plarform for our league. A half arse solution with limited bench spots, adjusting the point system etc just isnt the way to go ihmo.

Start up the leagues and we can take league discussion into the league?

Seems we have come to grips with ESPN so we could have GRS and Rick B. start the leauges up and send the invites so we know who is where – then tackle the rest of the setup within the leagues

It's all good. Nothing to get stressed about.

Still over a month to the draft. I bet if GRSF re-invites you to the league it will work.

Sandy,

Can you just go to the ESPN fantasy site and click “Baseball” and see if you can join the league from there?

by BobZupcic on Feb 11, 2012 9:52 PM EST reply actions

I isn't like yahoo in that way,

at least from what I’ve gathered. If there was a league ID and password, then it would be easy. I’m not seeing that anywhere in the league settings.

Has Kraken responded at all?

Should I just go ahead and sign up for league 2?

I think kraken is out.

If you haven’t already signed up for league 2, I would hold off. You have already been mentioned as his possible replacement.

Any other openings?

This thread is dense with info. I took a year off from fantasy last year for the first time in nearly a decade, and I’ve already got the itch back. So if there are openings in any of these leagues, keeper or not, regardless of format, I’ll throw my hat in.

Thats cool, I transferred to the University I wanted to go to and forgot about looking for more information about this. Can’t wait to watch some games once the seasons starts though!
