An interesting note on Aviles
Aviles has a career UZR/150 at SS of 12.4. That's better than any other position for Aviles. In comparison, Scutaro's career UZR/150 at SS is 2.8. Aviles also has a better career wRC+ than Scutaro. Maybe this is what the Sox FO saw when they traded away Scutaro, they thought Aviles was better at SS, and they could sign a pitcher. I would still rather have Scutaro, because I still think he's a little better than Aviles, but hopefully, Aviles is as good or better.

You're killing me.
A lot of us have hopes for Aviles for 2012, thinking that the FO might have moved Scutaro with the hopes that we could catch Aviles’ “Scutaro” year (that last one in Toronto, with the ridiculous WAR).
However, Aviles UZR/150 at SS is based on him playing the position regularly in…
2008? 91 games at SS…
2009 34 games at SS
2010 13 games at SS
2011 14 games at SS
So… we’re looking at four years since he played the position “regularly” and a total SSS issue, right?
I mean, I really hope moving him back to SS sees an impact player there, but it’s a little much to compare that to Scutaro’s career UZR/150 at the position.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
Impending Bososx comment on how UZR is just as reliable as wOBA over the course of a season...

I did not say it was,
I said UZR was as reliable as wOBA at 1500 innings. I did a study on it. Now I acknowledged that I would rather have Scutaro than Aviles, but I would rather have a pitcher and Aviles than Scutaro and no pitcher. Aviles has 1212 career innings at SS. If you regress his total, his UZR/150 is way above average at 10.
Well, I found something we agree on: I'd rather have Scutaro, but rather have Aviles and a pitcher.
However… this goes to that thread the other day where people were talking about comparing someone’s stats from three years ago, and trying to project the 2012 season with it.
I know, I know… that was all in jest, and yet… you seem to be focused on his 1212 career innings at a position he hasn’t played regularly (most of those 1212 career innings) since 2008.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

I understand the enthusiasm Bososx
But some things are better left as comments rather than their own fanposts. This is coming from someone who is all too eager to get Robert off the front page. It’s 4:30? Awww hell. Least there’s no football to sleep through tomorrow.

I'm almost certain I made Robert cry and that's why he hasn't been back.

This marks the first case in recorded history
where “interesting” was used to describe Mike Aviles.
Everything Must Go.
Well he did come in at #4 in the ROY
voting in 2008. So I’m sure there were some folks saying that was interesting
I think I carried him on my fantasy team that year...
… I had hopes for him the next season too.
However, I think we can all agree… I hope Aviles’ return to SS does successfully translate to Bososx13’s research for his performance there. It’ll be good for the team, and could make us a better team overall.

Aviles in 2009 came out of the gate with a putrid start to the season
by late-May he had managed a 0.458 OPS in 120 AB. Come to find out – he neded Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow. The Royals then basically gave up on him and gave the position to one Yuniesky Betancourt. From then on he was pegged as a utility guy even though he’s a much better hitter than Betancourt.
It’s worth noting that in 2010, coming back from injury and being bounced around to about every position on the infield, Aviles managed a 104 OPS+ in 448 PAs
Again, I have high hopes for him this year too.
Just still want a #4 starter…
