Marlon Byrd

Fangraphs just came out with an article about the Sox outfield as you can read here:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/red-sox-need-outfield-help/

With Ryan Kalish suffering yet again from injury and the news Carl Crawford may miss some time or his wrist surgery linger coupled with the fact that Ryan Sweeney is miscast as a starter, the Sox outfield (while not its biggest problem) is becoming a secondary issue.

Is Marlon Byrd part of the solution?

Star-divide

Byrd does make sense in a few ways (1) As mentioned above the Sox could use a bit of help in the outfield and lo and behold, Byrd just happens to play a pretty decent outfield and (2) The Cubs and the Sox if you haven't heard are embroiled in a mess with regards to "Theo Compensation"

Byrd, in essence, could be the proverbial killer of two birds with the lone stone. Let's look a bit closer at the Pros and Cons of Marlon B.

Pros:

  • Signed for one year only
  • Plays a solid defensive outfield by most defensive metrics
  • Can hit a bit (yeah he managed a 0.314 wOBA last year but his peripherals match up well with his previous years which are more in tune with a 0.343-0.344'ish wOBA)
  • He has pretty even splits

Cons:

  • He is on schedule to make 6.5 million in 2012, hardly the kind of contract the club needs to take on in its current "no spend" state
  • He's probably not really a starter on a championship club, but more of a 4th guy that you can move around to fill holes/cover for injury, etc. and not take a huge step back

-Thoughts?

Do you think he'd be mad at Aceves for breaking his face?

I’m not opposed to Byrd, but we’d still have to send an OK prospect for him, compensation or no.

The Cubs have already said they aren't giving up a major leaguer.

I think Sox fans should be prepared to be disappointed. Bud isn’t going to set a precedent like this for future years. If you guys get Trey McNutt, you should be thrilled.

most Sox fans know its going to be very little to nothing

If anything the Red Sox should be giving the Cubs compensation for taking Theo’s act out of Boston.

While that might be true...

…he is winning over a lot of fans in Chicago. He’s not going all Crawford/Lackey on us just yet.

give it time

he is not the guy he was back in the first 3 years on the job with Boston.

I think he will do well, but he is not as good as he used to be, league caught up.

That's probably true.

So far so good. I’m sure he’ll throw out some big contracts and some won’t work out, but that’s the price you pay of being a big market team.

My thoughts - the Sox OF is in this state due to the front office

Then, to add insult to injury – the one guy I have always liked and the saber dudes ridiculed on this site is Ellsbury – who is frankly the only bright spot in this OF lineup so I am shocked he has not been traded for a dirty cleat and a former first round pitcher who is worthless…

if some had their way (prior to last season) the one OF bright spot would be traded

Forget Byrd

Did anyone even notice we signed Jason Repko to a minor league deal?

C’mon! What’s the matter with you guys!

How did that get missed?

Certainly an interesting development.

Yankee's signed Oki, oh no

I would love to see him pitch against us at Fenway

I would imagine that when he gave up a homer, we could blast the Oki Doki song.

BTW...

…what does everyone think of Sweeney? He went to my HS and I’ve always been a fan. Hoping to see him finally reach his potential.

him platooning at Fenway

sounds like a recipe for success. Don’t really have faith that he’s more than a 4th OF/platoon bat, but should work well for that.
