Carl Crawford Had "Routine" Wrist Surgery
This news coming right after the announcement that Victor Martinez will miss all of 2012 for Detroit due to surgery to repair a torn ACL in his knee, too.
According to Brian MacPherson (who I saw this come from first) Cherington won't rule out Crawford for Opening Day.

Awesome, just awesome.

Sounds like he'll be performing baseball activities throughout the spring
Arthro isn’t invasive, so this should be a quick heal.

They said they hope to have him ready by opening day.
We’ll see. The previous training staff left a bad taste in my mouth on injury milestones, let’s hope the new guys are a little better.

He may be, rut roh, now the quote is
Crawford is expected to play “the bulk of the season”

Not if I have anything to say about it.

If we apply our Universal Red Sox Translator
to Red Sox recovery projections, we can expect Carl to be ready by August. This is based on our expereince with Clay (He’ll only be out a couple weeks) Buchholz and Kevin (He’ll be back by September 1st) Youklis.
By the way, the over/ under in Vegas on the number of ADDITIONAL operations CC will require is 2.
Hah!
Tough break, shame too, VMart is such a great guy too. I miss having him around.
I am Sandy's bitch.

Yes
But at least we shouldn’t hear the “should’ve signed V-Mart” chorus this season.
simul justus et peccator
No, they'll all turn into "should have signed Beltre" people
especially when Youk goes down for the season three weeks into May.

well Beltre = No Agon realistically
i dont know whether i want that

Well, for 2011, if Youk had been at first and played all season?
However, yes… I think over the length of the AGon deal we will be much happier with that move than having kept Beltre a few more years.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
Wait a second...
We’re supposed to be getting production out of left field?

As I always tell myself when I think about Crawford's 2011
At least Boston doesn’t have Jason Bay

by Marc Normandin on Jan 17, 2012 3:56 PM EST up reply actions
You know, honestly
I think leaving Boston was the biggest mistake Bay ever made. I can’t imagine he’d have the same power outage playing in Fenway, and if he wasn’t pressing he wouldn’t have suffered that concussion.
I wish we still had Jason Bay.

Well, we were paying him the same yearly salary for two years
if he still performed after those two years (as I feel he could have) he could have had another two or three year deal this offseason.
He’d have ended up with more money, and we would have made the playoffs in both 2010 and 2011.
But you’re right, I wouldn’t have turned down that contract, there’s no way he could have known.

So, just curious... any chance this "routine" surgery corrects some wrist issue that affected his 2011 performance?
I mean, if 2011 was playing through some sort of injury that’s now been fixed, maybe there’s hope for an Ellsbury-like resurrection in 2012? Could you imagine if we got 30 HRs from both our LF and CF in 2012??
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.
Wait ’til THIS year!
I'm guessing not dramatically
or it probably is surgery he would’ve had right after the season, rather than January.
Hopefully, something will help his performance get back to past levels (Yes, TLD, I know)
Apparently
The pain existed before, but wasn’t bad enough for surgery or anything. And now it is.
Twitter: @Marc_Normandin
by Marc Normandin on Jan 17, 2012 4:10 PM EST up reply actions
yeah, got that, I'm just saying
if it was bad enough pain that it was seriously affecting his game, probably he would’ve taken some measures to help it before this point, right?
Things can be painful without surgery being required just yet
Especially in the midst of a season. Lackey going from tolerable to awful in regards to both production and his elbow health is a recent example.

I guess what I'm saying is
if his wOBA dropped by freakin 74 points between 2010-2011 because his wrist was hurting, I would certainly hope that he would’ve taken a fairly aggressive approach to treating it before the offseason began. I’m sure there was probably some occasional wrist pain before, but if he goes back to his 2010 self, I doubt it’s going to be because he had cartilage cleaned out.
This also assumes that all of the drop in production is attributed to the wrist
Which isn’t what I’m saying at all. He was clearly pressing, he dealt with a hamstring issue that slowed him down, too, and to top it off, his wrist wasn’t 100 percent.

by Marc Normandin on Jan 17, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions
A ton of his drop in production can be attributed
to a stupendously awful April….most players would be hard pressed to overcome 97 AB of 0.431 OPS
Or a team to recover from an 0-6 or 2-11 start...
Hence, our season really was over in April, as many claimed.
;)

Yeah, I think you're probably right, Wolf.
Fair enough that it may have affected him, but if it was believed it was seriously affecting performance, he’d have had the surgery right away.
Still… I hope the repaired wrist gives him more confidence, if nothing else, and results in better performance in 2012.
I thought we’d never win it all. And then we went down 0-3 to the Yankees in 2004, and I thought it was the end of the world.

Only if the surgery
was brain surgery teaching him how to play the monster, then strengthening his shoulder so he can have an acceptable pickoff arm in Fenway’s LF.

I'd be down with
somehow convincing him to take up full-time missionary work for the rest of his life, leading to an early retirement.

Perhaps convincing him he really is a superhero
then sending him off to fight in the Middle East, Captain America-style.

Somewhere...
…Darnell McDonald is locking away a doll and sending money to Haiti.
I'm remembering how
PD needed assurances by the doc that he would not further injure himself, and how Ells got himself healed before playing, both returning to great seasons. Am also reminded that playing through wrist injuries caused Papi and Lowrie huge problems for nearly two years. CC’s is thankfully a minor tweak and easy fix, but it sure could have hurt his 2011 performance. I wonder if Lin or Linares will be good enough in ST to break with the team if CC isnt ready? Lin in RF, Sweeney in LF?

It’s the .618 OPS in AAA that has you salivating, right?

This makes me cautiously optimistic for the future.
Crawford will never be the player he was in Tampa Bay, but this might help him back up to the 2.5-3 WAR area. Not worth his contract by any means, but I won’t want to puke every time I remember he’s on the team.

His wrist shouldn't have anything to do with his poor pitch recognition,*
or his crappy defense.
*I suppose he couldn’t check his swing, but that still doesn’t do much when swinging at curveballs in the dirt. Or flinging your bat at balls in the other batters box.
I distinctly remember watching him and Salty opening weekend and saying, “Is this a joke?”
That's why I said "cautiously"
as in “his chances of success have risen from ‘get the fuck of my team’ to ‘go sit on the bench.’”

I once had “routine wrist surgery!” Well, maybe not so routine, I tripped and my arm fell through a window and my artery popped! It was wrist surgery, though!
