What is Seattle doing?

In the last 10 months, they have gotten rid of Fister, and now,Pineda. In return they get prospects and Jesus Montero. They may as well trade Hernandez, too. The Sox would never take on his contract and don't have the prospects it would take to get him. But, Seattle will lose with him or without him. Felix could put some team over the top. This is a truly bad management out there. How many more years will their fans have to put up with it?

They're in a "rebuilding phase"

Which basically means they have no money and they suck.

He

wouldn’t take a huge loss each year if he would spend what it would take to field a winner. As I have posted before, Seattle has proven it will support a winner. As Gabe Paul once said about Cleveland, Seattle is a sleeping giant. If this Nintendo guy is still taking a hit, after putting up a WS win, he should get the hell out of the buisness.

Rebuilding Phase

They are always in a rebuilding phase. They make the old ownership look good.At least they produced some great players, but then let them go. Some players the M’s have lost over the years, through stinginess or bad judgement..

Griffey JR
A-Rod
Tino Martinez
Jeff Nelson
Mike Jackson
Billy Swift
The Unit
Freddy Garcia
Omar Visquel
Carlos Guilen
Derek Lowe
JJ. Putz
Soriano
David Ortiz
Cliff Lee

and many more that Mariners fans might remember.

Of course they have the money. Why won’t Baseball do something about fraud ownerships, and that includes Boston’s.

Sean,

I understand your philosophy. I just can’t get past John Henry buying a soccer team for 400 million dollars, and God no’s what else on race cars. Don’t you think the owner of the Boston Red Sox should have them as their first priority? It’s nothing like the stuff he did to get rich. It’s the Red Sox. I know I’ve said this, probably to many times, but John Henry could reach into his own pocket and buy the players they need to win again. He has lost interest.
BTW, there is a great movie on HBO called “Town”. The story ends with a heist of cash stowed away in Fenway. I had to wonder how much Henry got for letting them shoot at Fenway.

Another friggin' time

it would be idiotic for him to take a huge operating loss each year.

We will have a 180m+ payroll, second highest in the game. Blaming this on ownership being cheap is beyond any reasonable conclusion.

by Sean O on Jan 14, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

No

he’s making a killing, and putting it in his pocket, with no concern for the team, the city,or the fans. Yes, he is a smart man. With revenue sharing, ticket sales,Sprinng Training income, sponsership money, food, beer, parking, souveniers, a beautiful ball park, and a hundred other revenue sources that any MLB team with a stadium generates, why should he put a winner on the field if he can get away with not doing it?

by Robert57 on Jan 14, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

Yet he spends over $170 million of that revenue on the team,

and you’re calling that cheap? Cheap is the Pirates owner. The Red Sox have made dumb personnel decisions over the year, that’s why they are in this mess, because they’ve spent money on players that don’t fit this team (Crawford) or have drastically underperformed their contracts (Lackey and Matsuzaka).

TRUE TRUE AND TRUE

The Wonder boy really screwed things up in the end,and yes,Pittsburg is a joke. How they are allowed to operate that great franchise in such a stingy manner is beyond me. Still, can you honestly say to me that they couldn’t have scared up another 8 mill to keep Kuroda from going to the Yankees, never mind, helping us? Our chances of getting anywhere this year took a huge hit. With the Yankees doing what they always do,out smarting the Red Sox,they will win another division, and one of these years, they will get back to the Series for the 29th time.

by Robert57 on Jan 14, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

You know he's lost money on the Sox before right?

That not every season has turned out some wild profit right? You know the Red Sox also are part of his net worth and he doesn’t have a billion dollars just laying around right? His assets and ownerships are all part of what he is worth.

by Robert57 on Jan 17, 2012 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks

for the link. He tells us that owners are Billionaires. That’s what I’ve been saying all along. What happenned in Cleveland is the perfect example of what I’m talking about. John Hart built a winner and Dick Jacobs funded it with moves like bringing in Roberto Alomar, and David Justice, even though they didn’t need more hitting. This is the kind of commitment that all owners should make. If their living depends on what a Baseball franchise earns, they should get out.

Then, Larry Dolan came in and cut off the legs of the franchise, tearing the hearts out of their fans in the process by breaking up a great team. Why should the fans be blamed for whining, while owners themselves are whining and crying about small markets. Now, they have an empty stadium, and no buzz on game days because they know the owners are pulling a con job on them. They know, going into the season, that the team has no chance. I can tell you from experience that the buzz on game days near the Stadium was electric, back in the late ’90’s. People selling tickets, talking Tribe, wearing Tribe gear, and soaking up the joy of having their team back in it.. Everyone was excited, and were proud of their team. A very unifying experience for a region. Those days are gone now because of Larry Dolan’s unwillingness to spend.

The Yankees don’t win every year, but going back to ‘96, they have won six pennants because the Steinbreners were willing to spend what it takes to win. That’s six pennants. Out of all those pennants, they won five WS. The Yankees are my best argument. Who can compete with that. And I don’t mean revenue. I mean commitment. These seasons have brought joy to NY and the Steinbrenners were no worse for the wear.

I have no problem with an owner that does his best to field a championship team, and doesn’t win it all in the end. Of course you’re not going win every year. At least the owner tried.. I do have problems with John Henry, knowing we are a couple of players away, and refusing to budge.

A far as those charts go, I don’t believe that John Henry has lost a dime, but even if he has,so what. He can afford it. If they actually are losing money, then get out of the game. If it is threatening he and his familys future, get out of the game.

People are mixing up what I mean by cheap. They have one of the largest payrolls in Baseball, but why shouldn’t they. They own the second most storied franchise in history. A cash cow. It has become evident that the payroll needs to be higher if they want to win..He won’t spend that extra 20 million, or so, that it would take to give the team the best shot of getting over the top. That is unaceptable, and he should sell the team to someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes Baseball. Baseball,(not soccer and drag racing) and someone who loves the Red Sox

This trade shows more than any other that Felix is not going anywhere.

I thought it might be possible, but the Yankees couldn’t assemble a package to get it done despite having maybe the most appetizing hitting prospect of the last few years outside of Harper. They traded Pineda because they a) got Montero and b)have some very good young prospects that are close to being able to take his place already. They don’t have anyone to replace Felix and now that they have Montero I’m not sure any team had the pieces to get it done and they probably don’t want to, teams have been offering up there farms for years for him.

Well, let's see about that.

Tulo, Castro, Hanley, and Jose Reyes are better than him, obviously. I’d argue that Alexei and Peralta are also better, so that’s six. I’d also put Asdrubal Cabrera, Yunel Escobar, Elvis Andrus and JJ Hardy ahead of Scutaro.

Obviously that’s not in order, but those are 10 shortstops who I personally believe are better than Scutaro. Scoot’s probably 11th or 12th, depending on where you put Rollins.

He had a really good season this year

No doubt, especially because he seemed to be alive at the end of the year unlike everyone else. But a 36 year old with a career 93 OPS+ is not the most comforting thought.

No, it's not

but we have more pressing things to worry about, like the complete lack of a starting rotation or decent corner outfielders.

I would be shocked if he plays 100 games next season.

I think they can compete in 2013

2014 definitely if the right moves are made. With Boston’s resources a rebuild would not take as long as say the A’s/Orioles, etc. Yo go 81-82 wins year 86-88 the next and by the third you are back up to the 92-94 range

I'd be okay with a rebuild, I really would

A Financial Loss?

How would you no that. How do you know that Fielder wouldn’t put put fannies in the seats, by showing the fans that they are willing to spend? What about their revenue sharing?

As I said before

It’s a free market. As free as Henry was to purchase the team and do as it wants with it, spend the 2nd most amount of money on it over the last decade and help guide it to two championships, you are free to not attend or attend games of teams that meet up more with your ideals, perhaps the Pirates weren’t your speed, maybe the Yankees, they spend the most so clearly their owners care the most about you as a person. Or maybe you can use your freedom to purchase your own baseball team, charge whatever you like, sign whomever you like and probably run it’s ass straight into the ground.

You have options my friend.

I am Sandy's bitch.

I think the reason that the Mariners aren't wiling to spend alot of cash...

Would probably be due to the massive losses the company suffered during the 2011 fiscal year. I doubt that after lossing nearly 1 billion in profit, the company is willing to dole out cash to the Mariners.

Maybe

they lose money because the team sucks, and isn’t very interesting to watch, because they won’t spend more money.

by Robert57 on Jan 22, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

They lose money because they're Nintendo

It’s got nothing to do with their baseball team.

Why are you still here? I can’t believe you remembered how to sign in, I don’t think you’re that smart.

If we ignore him, will he go away?

As much as I can’t stand Sean O’s constant negativity (although I can certainly understand some of it with the way this baffling offseason has gone) I’d rather listen to that than this frivolous stupidity.

I think we can agree that this offseason has not gone very well, although I think that the Melancon and Bailey trades will turn out to be very good for the Sox in the long run. But the front office has said from the beginning that their goal was to not go over the luxury tax threshhold if they possibly can and by as little as possible if they do. That effectively ties Cherrington’s hands.

The offense did not need a lot of work this offseason. I expect we’ll still be in the top of most offensive categories this year. What we needed was pitching, pitching, pitching. What has Cherrington done? Stockpiled arms. THey may not be GREAT arms, but he’s gone out and gotten pitching. Now I’m not going to sit here and bullshit you all that i think Cook and Padilla are the solutions. They aren’t. They’re the number 6 and 7 starters for when one of our starting 5 inevitably goes down to injury.

Am I happy about the Scutaro trade? Not particularly UNLESS it means we can get a good starting pitcher, which I suspect we will hear about a signing soon. As I’ve said elsewhere, I suspect that that announcement won’t come today out of respect for the Patriots playing the AFC Championship game.

Really, what I’m saying is this. We don’t really know what decisions are being made. We don’t KNOW who they’re targeting for a starting pitcher now that they have that extra $6M that they aren’t paying Scutaro. We could be pleasantly surprised. But there’s still plenty of time in this offseason so let’s all just wait and see what happens.

And if it does end up being Cook and Padilla in the #4 and #5 starter positions… well, I’ll be vocal about chewing out Cherrington as well… I’m willing to give him a chance to get things done though.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with that, TLD

I’m just saying that until we see what the final composition of the 2012 Sox is we should hold judgement and give him a chance that he will find a way to fix this mess he has definitely made. Sorry. I’m, by nature, an optimist. :)
