About 20 minutes after a mystery move for the Mariners was being thrown around, we now know that it's for Jesus Montero, and they're sending Michael Pineda to New York.

In before panicky calls for Kuroda. Actually, I'll be first: sign Kuroda.

They couldn't possibly

Since they’ve signed so many replacement level, huge-money contracts.

Oh wait, it’s only the Red Sox who are hamstrung that way.

Right now this looks like a great deal for the MFY, in my opinion.

They probably could have gotten more talent for Montero and a hypothetical B level Prospect

Pineda is fantastic, though

Maybe I’m underrating Montero’s bat, but trading 5 years of a cost-controlled #3 floor starter for a position-less bat at Safeco doesn’t make sense to me.

on the positive side, it means the Yankees are probably not interested in the remaining FA starters. If Kuroda really does want to come to the Sox or Yankees, we may get him on a great deal.

as a yankee fan

it sounds like a good deal. my people @ PSA were livid at first because of all the Jesus love. but at the end of the day, we got a 22 year old with ace potential for a shitty catcher who hits well. i say win NYY.. do you guys go after E Jax or Oswalt?

I piss excellence

by NYC Jim347 on Jan 14, 2012 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Jesus had a spot in NYY line-up pretty much if you think he is an everyday catcher which is still up in the air. I think alot of people believe the DH spot will need to be kept relatively open (ala no full timer like Ortiz) so that as A-Rod, Tex, etc age they have a place to rest them.

Regardless, it was the right thing to do for NY. Good Starting pitching is the hottest commodity in sports. It’s expensive (usually) on the FA market, expensive (usually) in the trade market, and takes years to develop.

Gonzalez: huge talent, huge contract

I’d definitely want a very strong return, but the Padres didn’t trade the contract, they traded the player. We’d be trading both.

Everything Must Go.

The Padres sort of traded the player

if we didn’t have a handshake agreement on the contract we wouldn’t have made the trade.

Before you all start slitting your wrists

Pineda is young and has great stuff, but I doubt he will dominate in this division.

He has 2 pitches, throws the slider 30%+ of the time despite having a prior elbow injury in the minors, and is an extreme flyball pitcher. He lacks an out pitch against LHB, which was not a major issue in Safeco considering that park heavily suppresses lefty HR. Yankee Stadium otoh is lefty power hitter heaven. He is certainly better than anyone on the Yankees not named CC, but I am very skeptical he is a future ace.

As for Kuroda, the day I’m afraid of a 37 year old NL West pitcher who’s averaged 2.9 WAR a year over the last 3 seasons is not anytime soon.

A casual WAR projection of the Boston/NYY rotations as currently constituted, notwithstanding the fact that the Red Sox are almost certainly signing another starter, puts the Yankees barely ahead. And I’m being very conservative with these estimates especially with regards to Beckett and Lester, and weighing the fact that both new Yankee starters are moving to a far more hostile offensive environment.

Beckett/Lester combined = 8.5
Buchholz = 2.5
Bard = 2.0
Mystery #5 = 1.5
Total = 15.0

Sabathia = 6.0
Pineda = 3.0
Kuroda = 2.5
Nova = 2.5
Burnett = 1.5
Total = 15.5

Wow, the Yankees are definitely far and away superior. Yup I’m definitely going to quit on the season already. Good moves on Cashman’s part but if you’re on the ledge, try thinking rationally.

I think Lester is the only one in that group that you can truly count on.

Beckett of course is always a candidate for a very good season (I think the even year thing is just utter bullshit), but he also is likely to wind up on the disabled list with a blister or something. Buchholz, I want to believe he can be consistent, but one way or another he hasn’t been. He looked legitimately good last year before he got hurt, he was lucky good the year before, he’s had injuries he’s had failures, he’s been all over the place.

In a world where all are healthy, there is nothing wrong with that as a top 3, it’s a very good top three, but there is a lot that can go wrong with it.

I am Sandy's bitch.
