24 Hour Wait Period to Post

I don't know if I'm crazy but it seems like there has been an increase in the number of unsubstantiated and idiotic posts lately. While sometimes I do find them entertaining in a Real House Wives of NJ kind of way they do not live up to the quality of what I expect at OTM.

I know that other SB nation blogs have the 24 hour wait period to post after signing up to the blog. This can't hurt, and can only help OTM. See Peter Osgoods Theo fantpost for case in point.

Indeed it won't completely eliminate the problem, but if the the troll really has the urge to troll at that point in time they will move on and probably leave OTM alone.

Just my two cents.

And I hate to say that Halos Heaven does anything right

but they also have strict criteria (believe it or not) on what can be posted as a FanPost, and if it fails to meet that criteria it is pulled down immediately. I don’t feel this is a bad idea at all, frankly.

Halo Heaven

is the most poorly run site on SBN. The gestapo comes to mind. You gotta have some flexibility. But yeah, I agree with your main point; these moronic posts should be removed.

For the record, people,

Halos Heaven should be renamed Moronibad. I’m not saying that we should become HH. I got booted outta HH by the Rev for agreeing with the Rev on something.

What I am saying is that if, when someone joins, you state in the terms that all FanPosts must adhere to a certain level of quality, then you can ensure that you don’t have crap like “African American Style” pop up on an intelligent website. That is simply editorial duties at that point and may help to maintain quality of this site.

oh yes

I remember this. You talked about it, which inspired me to go over there and troll for a while. I was banned within ten minutes, came back here and bragged about it, and then was sharply scolded for it. ha ha ha. good times.

I'm a little leery about voicing my dissent here.

but I really don’t want us to turn into HalosHeaven. Yes, the trolling has been bad lately, and I agree with the 24 hour wait period. But our purpose here should be to educate, not segregate. Everyone who comes here should be treated with respect until they give cause not to. We don’t need to start stripping down fanposts unless it’s clearly trolling, if someone comes here who is truly a fan, but hasn’t yet been educated on the subjects we talk about here, then it is our duty to take him or her under our wing and educate them, not ridicule them and take down their posts like some other blogs on the west coast would.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a midwesterner, but I do think we need to be more friendly than vengeful.

I see where you're coming from to an extent

but we’re talking about having editorial control over FanPosts, not preventing people from commenting. Many of the ridiculous posts that have been made lately are things that could simply have been a comment in a thread somewhere. There is nothing wrong with demanding a standard of quality.

Personally, I joined the community, read some articles, made some comments to articles, interacted with fellow Sox fans, and got a feel for the community. After a certain amount of time, I made a FanPost.

I think that joining a community and then immediately making an angry WEEI-esque FanPost is simply bad form. I was “taken under the OTM wing” so to speak when I first joined, and that was by interacting, not by ranting my first day in class. I think it is okay to expect others to behave the same way.

Perhaps in a perfect world you would need a certain number of posts on articles etc before you could author a fanpost yourself.

by upCHUCK on Sep 3, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

That gets too complicated for me.

If you get guys who know what they’re talking about, it’s fine to let them post after a day or 2. But if you get guys who start commenting in GDTs and realize that they are a bit ignorant of many elements of the game, common sense dictates that they will keep their dignities and wait to post something good. If they realize that but still post something moronic, well, they will get eviscerated by commentors which will likely bruise their egos or at least make them stop posting.

I actually like this idea, if it were possible.

15 comments means you can post, or something.

yeah I like this idea

I’m not for applying ‘HH’ or ‘LL’ style strict editorial controls. However a 24 hour wait before posting anything plus a threshold number of comments (10-15?) posted before creating a fan post – that’s not only a reasonable ‘experiential threshold’ for the serious (non-troll) poster but also being purely numeric requires no extra editorial burden for the moderators.

I agree that would be fine too.

I do note that lots of SB Nation blogs DO force a 24 hr wait for even posting comments and it seems to work. But really, even what you describe would probably help.

I do not think SBN can do that

just from my site, to enforce the 24 hour waiting period you just click on a box to enforce it or not. There is nothing about fanposts, just all in general.

The other thing is that I expect posts like this to increase in frequency

given the reciprocal relationship that now exists between SB Boston and WEEI.

That, I think, was a bad idea

I don’t know if it was a money issue, or what, but it seemed like OTM was getting some good traffic anyway, from insightful viewers who could live up to the SBNation standard. Partnering with WEEI opens OTM up to the public market where people who aren’t actually interested in “Baseball” visit to read why Mazz thinks the Red Sox are terrible.

But through GDTs and other posts, new guys tend to become educated.

But when guys just try to flex their muscles with a fanpost, sometimes they need an ego check.

We had the 24 Hour wait period until very recently.

But the reason for it, at least to me, was to avoid spam and, to some extent, trolls from other sites. Not to maintain certain levels of quality in fanposts.

And, quite frankly, if there’s a bad fanpost, then the comments sections seem to work just fine to eviscerate them. Then you’ve got stuff like Beau’s, uh, piece, which I honestly just left there because I was really hoping someone would explain what the hell was going on there.

The thing about the wait period is that the negatives are apparent, while the positives are hidden. You don’t see the good posters who just decide to pass on the site because of the wait period when it’s on, and when it’s off it’s not an obvious separation between them and the typical regulars. I don’t remember for sure, but I have a feeling there was no wait period when I joined, and that if there hadn’t been, I would’ve passed all-together.

Good point, but if the wait period would just stop FanPosts, it would work.

I first joined OTM to join a GDT, my first post came long after. After I realized how ignorant I was of elements such as sabermetrics, rule 5, prospects, and arbitration, just to name a few, I decided that there was no point to posting anything, because I would not bring anything new, and I would probably make quite a few errors.

My first or second GDT, back in 08 or 09, I said that the Sox should call up Lars Anderson, who may or may not have even been on the 40 man. To my defense, it was when we had Jeff Bailey and Aaron Bates playing 1st, but still, it was quite ridiculous. I wasn’t ripped by anyone on the site, which was quite nice. This is why I don’t jump all over a new guy’s comment in a GDT or other post.

I wouldn’t have minded some of these posts like Peter or Beau’s, but they are factually incorrect. If it was just an extremely radical viewpoint backed up with facts, it would likely spark a healthy debate, which are quite fun here at OTM. I don’t know if there are any SBN mandated rules or even a way to only stop fanposts for 24 hours, but I think for the aforementioned reasons that it would be most effective.

but the settings aren’t available to do that. At least not at the moment.

Ben, can you explain the partnership with WEEI for me?

With the general feelings towards WEEI around here it doesn’t make much sense to me that OTM is partnered with them. If it’s a money thing then I understand, if not, then I’m confused.

You make a great point there, Ben.

I joined and saw the waiting period, and it was a while (somewhere between a few days and a few months….I don’t remember) before I came back and started participating. Now I did join on November 12th, so there wasn’t really much happening here, but still, it was definitely a deterrent.

But when a hypothetical reader sees that the top fanpost is "time to get rid of Theo Epstein"

It just looks bad. Do we want this kind of stuff associated with OTM?

At that point we're just having idiot battles then, yeah?

1). Moron writes stupid article
2). Second Moron fails to read article, choosing to obtain his information strictly from titles.
3). OTM shuts down.

Fanposts are fanposts.

If it said “Time to get rid of Theo Epstein” and made a good argument, then it wouldn’t be going away anyways.
