Game 136: This One's for . . . Well . . . It's for Something, Alright?
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox, Sep 1, 2011 7:10 PM EDT
Tonight is the end of the penultimate Sox-Yankees facedown of the season. So this game will decide:
- Who wins the season series! No wait, the Sox already have that.
- Who will take over first place in the AL East! Erm, no. The Sox will still lead the division, no matter who wins tonight.
- Who will make the playoffs! Nice try, lone1c. Ha ha ha.
- Whether or not AJ Burnett will keep his job in the Yankees' rotation? Hmm. A distinct possibility.
- Whether the Sox can deny the Yankees their first series win since May of last season? Also true.
OK, so there is a bit to play for. Pride and apple pie and grandma and other good stuff like that.
So, for the team from the Bronx, their representative 60' 6" away from home plate will be the aforementioned Mr. Burnett.
Burnett has certainly struggled this year. For example, consider the following:
Q: What's the difference between a piñata and AJ Burnett?
A: One falls completely apart once hit a few times. The other is a party game stuffed with candy.
It's almost gotten to the point where one could entertain the suggestion that he's been worse than John Lackey, all things considered.
Unfortunately for Burnett, he opponent on the mound is a guy whose initials are also "J.L." Unfortunately, it's not John Lackey, but this guy:
Take a look at that line, AJ. That's Lester having a rough go of things. Feel better yet? No? Well, then maybe this lineup will cheer you up:
Lefties. Lots of lefties. Oh, and Girardi? If you bring out a lefty, all of a sudden we have a LRLRLLRLR lineup. So there.
Go Sox!

Shouldn't our devious plan be to make Burnoutt look like Cy Young, v2.0?
That way, the MFY will keep him on their postseason roster, much to their inevitable regret.
"What's so special about Lou Gehrig? Shouldn't EVERY Yankee have a disease named after him?"
No, we want him to be just good enough to keep his spot
But bad enough to give away the game.

But Yankees/Red Sox is just so intolerably boring…I mean who could ever enjoy this sport the way those guys play it…they should institute a mandatory fine for every moment over 5 seconds that they hold onto the ball…why don’t you guys watch the D-Backs and the Brewers, there’s some real baseball for you
I don't think so
Despite having the third most points (fourth most after you overtake me this week), my team had an epic collapse. I think like 60% or more of my losses were by less than 30 points. Very discouraging.
Blowing that game last week killed me
I HAD to have that game with the German coming up this week, and my team choked big time. With Rogue and BZ facing creampuffs this week, I NEED Brogshan to lay an egg against the 4-17 team this week.
But I don’t think it will happen.
Oh yeah definitely
I’d like to try a different format if people are up for it, maybe auction drafts, but I’d play anything
My team this year will go down in infamy
Talk about a bunch of losers. After finishing third last year, my first year playing, this was a big time sophomore slump.

Ground ball up the middle...
Lester could have fielded it, but was out of position. When it got to second, for Scutaro to make an easy play, it kicked up off the base and over his head into CF.
Easy ground ball to Scutaro
but the ball hit 2nd base and bounced into shallow right center
Ortiz/Crawford/Lowrie due up
Preseason, I think the confidence order in those guys was probably the opposite of what it is now
How silly is it all the money we spent on Carl...
… and we got the production we expected from him out of Ellsbury, a guy willing to bat lead off?
Yea
if that did happen this game probably wouldn’t mean much at all.
That's what's astonishing to me about this team
Ellsbury is really the only one having a career year, and it’s still an incredible offensive team. Ortiz is obviously a monster, but Youkilis and Pedroia are having very good, though not top tier offensive seasons, Adrian isn’t slugging like we thought he would, and our SS/LF/RF positions have been very empty (Reddick’s hot month or two aside).
This team could easily improve offensively…that’s a scary thought.
The Sox are tied for 7th in the Majors in catcher WAR
and that’s with the defense. They are tied for 5th in wRC+.
Varitamacchia has 23 HR and 78 RBI
we know Crawford is better than he has been this season. I fully expect him to be ok in the postseason. I have never been sold on Lowrie.
"Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off."
~Bill Veeck~
We've seen he is capable of getting hot for about a week
But unfortunately a week seems to be the limit. A .288 OBP, sub .400 SLG, and 17 stolen bases…combined with his complete inability to hit left handers, the ONLY thing we have to fall back on is his past performance.
Right, if you mean
we can fall back on his past performance as in over his career.

Yeah, better than he was for us.
Just nothing spectacular, imo. Except for his run in the playoffs last year.
Well, as you get closer into a black hole, time slows down, right?
So you’d be stuck approaching the epicenter of the black hole for eternity…
That’s my armchair recollection of black holes, anyway. In some Sci-Fi you go back in time.
The appearance of time only appears to slow to an outside observer.
Like, if I were falling into a black hole, and you were watching from a couch on a spaceship a safe distance away, I would appear to be stuck on the edge of the black hole. As I near the event horizon, my image would dim and ultimately vanish.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole#Event_horizon
From my perspective, I would be sucked in in a matter of seconds, have a short travel to the center and be reduced to all my component particles, probably while you’re still seeing my afterimage. Fun!
Say goodnight to the bad guy!

I'm not knocking him...
I just think it’s funny that we got all the production we did from Ells. I think if we’d anticipated his breakout year, we wouldn’t have signed Carl. I’m confident that Carl will come through big for this team during his contract, though.
Logically I'd agree with you
But he has looked so bad this year, it’s hard to believe he could be anything more than a 4th OF platoon!
Yeah, have to agree.
However, I cannot believe his talent just disappeared. I expect him to be better as early as next year. If he bounces back in the playoffs, though, all will be forgiven.
JD Drew was kind of meh in 2007 but saved the post-season in the ALCS IIRC.
Hopefully Carl can turn it on much sooner than that though.

MVP
Personally, I think the team MVP is clearly Pedroia, what he brings on and off the field, but that never seems to factor into the league voting, so I would lean towards Ellsbury being the canidate there
Anyone know if anyone has ever won the league MVP without winning their team MVP?
Yeah, Pedey is the heart and soul of this team.
And even if his offense isn’t what it was in his ROY or MVP seasons, his defense has been absolutely ludicrous this year. Not sure that gets captured by MVP voters, though.
I was thinking the same thing.
Why sac bunt the guy with one out?
Remy points out that he must have been aiming for 2nd base
Trying to bunt for a base hit. Still ill-advised.
Say goodnight to the bad guy!
MLB Network showed him in the dugout explaining...
Clearly, he thought there were no outs, and thought he was doing the right thing with the sacrifice. ARod and Jeter were giving him a hard time.
Of course, Mike Scioscia would say
“To set up the 2-out suicide squeeze bunt, of course!!!!11”
Say goodnight to the bad guy!

I think they should give him one more inning
and see if he can get through under 130 pitches, he can handle that

tuned in just in time for that Granderson catch
what’d I miss?
Lester throwing 43 pitches in the first inning, but grinding out a decent outing nonetheless.
And Pedey hitting a two run bomb off of Burnett.
i'm always suspicious of diving catches
All the dive means is that the ball was at the edge of the fielder’s range. It doesn’t tell us whether he had much range to begin with, or whether he did a good job positioning himself or getting a jump on the ball. Granderson has a terrible UZR, but because he can make a diving catch on national TV, his defense is suddenly earning raves.
I don't know... the replay they showed on MLBN looked like he got a great break.
He was hauling, and just got there for the catch. Looked like a good one to me.
this catch
after the replay, it seemed like a good catch, but we don’t need to have Costas telling us how Granderson’s defense makes him a strong MVP candidate.
Nobody would say Darnell McDonald was a great hitter just because he happened to hit a HR on national TV. But that kind of thing happens with fielding all the time.
I don't think he's saying Granderson isn't a candidate
just that Costas is taking 1 good play, and using it to suggest (inaccuratly) that Granderson is good defensively
Soooooo, how do you feel about the patented Jeter jump throw?

well..
no, really, they have a good lineup, even if they don’t have any superstars. They have an ace and a lot of help in the bullpen.
But yeah, it’s easy to see them knocked out in the playoffs. I would fear the Rangers and Tigers more. I’m not sure the right move is to try to make sure the Sox get the Tigers in R1.
well, they have a very good offense
and Sabathia has been great. Some luck with Colon & Garcia but their BP has some bright spots and of course Rivera.

trying not to be nostalgiac
but I swear that in the 70s they didn’t do 2-2 1/2 minutes of ads every single inning break. I would love some actual data on this, but I’m pretty sure it was standard to do at most one minute of ads between innings back then.
Somehow the TV pundits never even think about blaming themselves. And yet, it’s the one variable that we know has changed over the past few decades.
Be fun to get a newspaper to do that report.
Doubt you’d get the TV stations to cover it themselves.
I really don't think
that has changed much since the 70’s.
I think managers change pitchers more frequently, but pitchers also take longer between pitches now.
really?
I mean, are you sure?
I see no reason to think that pitchers are moving more slowly now than they did then.
We know that TV coverage has changed. There’s no reason to think human nature has changed.
we always hear the term "TV timeout" in games (moreso in football)
so I’d think they delay is on the advertisers as RickD said
"Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off."
~Bill Veeck~
One thing that has happened
is they do ads in the inning (Eastern Bank come to mind) but I don’t think they effect the length.
Other teams do not take this long, and thegame on Tuesday was not a national broadcast.
I had all three games broadcast here in Hawaii this week.
So pretty sure they were all national broadcast between ESPN on Wednesday, and the other two on the MLB Network.
another thing
pitching changes don’t need to take 10 minutes
So... was it Tessie's Dad or BobZupcic that asked for this scenario?
Rivera, BS, L as his line… we’ll get a chance.
I don't think I acually asked for it,
but if t comes to pass, well, c’est la vie.
