NESN Asks: Is Jason Varitek A Hall Of Famer?
Well, is he? I have my own thoughts on the topic (not even close), but let's hear from you.

Before a mob with torches comes after me
Varitek has been great in Boston, but between career length and his peak, I don’t think he makes the cut.

Agree, he's not even close.
I think if you posed the question to almost any fanbase besides the Red Sox, he isn’t even in the discussion.
I agree and voted the same.
He will always be a part of Red Sox lore…but that doesn’t make him a Hall of Famer.
Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

Nope. Not even close.
I dispense B.S. and facts. It is up to you to figure out which is which.
Red Sox Hall of Fame? Yes.
Baseball Hall of Fame?
Hell no.
The Red Sox suck, and I am the dirt that was sucked in, I am a dirty.
Agree completely
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

No.
Tek will go down as one of my favorite Sox ever, but he’s not transcendental, which is the sort of player a HOF’er should be. He should be in the Red Sox HOF, but not the big one.

Red Sox HoF?
Yep.
Number 33 retired? Yep.
Cooperstown? Nope.

consensus seems to be
no.
There aren’t many Hall of Fame catchers. Of Varitek’s generation, Pudge Rodriguez is definitely one. Aside from that…I don’t know. I would just put the entire Molina clan together as one exhibit.
Mauer could be on pace to be one eventually.
VMart hits well enough for a catcher, but his defense is awful and he may never play catcher again.
BTW, Posada isn’t one either.
Hmm…somehow I forgot about Mike Piazza. I suspect he’ll get in, though his defense was never spectacular. But “best hitting catcher ever” will do.
I agree with everyone else.
I love ‘Tek, but there is not a snowball’s chance that he makes the Hall of Fame. Red Sox Hall, sure and he damn sure deserves that, but the elite are the elite and it’s pretty clear that Tek isn’t that
Not a chance
He’s not among the greatest catchers of all time. If there were a Hall of Very Good, he’d belong there, but he’s not on the same level as the guys who belong in the Hall of Fame.
If you think about it just in terms of WAR, Tek has a career total of 25.1. The all-time leader among catchers, Johnny Bench, had a total of 81.5. Carlton Fisk’s was 74.4. Mike Piazza, who was one of the worst defensive catchers ever to play the game and is a shoo-in when he becomes eligible as long as not too many voters consider him tainted by the steroid era, had a total of 66.7. Even Gary Carter, who was regarded by some as not quite good enough for the Hall of Fame and only made it in on the sixth ballot with just 78% of the vote (with 75% required for induction), had a total of 72.5. And Jorge Posada’s total is 48.2, almost double Tek’s.
And the final nail in the coffin? Jason Kendall has a career WAR of 43.0. Now, I’ll grant you that that’s basically the same as Roy Campanella’s (43.1), but Campy only played ten years in the majors because of the color line. Absent something like that keeping you from playing, if you haven’t been more valuable than Jason Kendall, you’re not a Hall of Famer.
I think people forget just how damn good Kendall was before he got hurt
But no, Varitek is not a hall of famer.
I also don't understand
How 55% (at the moment) of the voters on NESN have convinced themselves that ’Tek belongs in the hall.
Luckily
55% wouldn’t be enough to get him there even if it was a real ballot!

Those are the fans the rest of baseball makes fun of.
I understand the love for Varitek, but if you think he belongs in the hall, you are either know very little about the Red Sox, or know very little about baseball in general.
He’s a good player, one that will be remembered in Red Sox lore. He is not however an elite godsend, that transended the sport.

Because only Bostonians are voting
It’s the homer vote. Tim Wakefield would do as well, but he’s also definitely not a Hall of Famer. And note that you need 75% of the vote to get into the Hall and even the homer crowd can’t clear that bar.
As much as I love 'Tek
And I do for what he brings to the Sox. AND despite his holding a record that I don’t expect to see broken (Most no-hitters caught) I have to say no.
That being said, I suspect he’d likely go in the Sox hall of fame, and I CERTAINLY expect him to have a job somewhere in the organization when he’s done playing.
Wish I could say yes
But unfortunately I don’t think he’s done enough for the HOF.
However, Tek will always be one of my favorite Sox. His is the first authentic jersey I saved the money to buy (and I’ll wear it until it falls apart). He should definitely be the last guy to wear #33 for the Sox, in my opinion. I’d also like to see him in the organization when he retires, I think he could make a good coach.

There are 2 schools of thought
One, his numbers, which show that he’s not good enough to get into the Hall of Fame. But the other include his gold glove, his captaining the Red Sox, winning 2 rings, calling multiple no hitters and generally being seen as an intangible benefit to the club. It’s on this latter point that he has no right whatsoever of getting into the Hall of Fame.
So I guess there’s just one result, and that’s what is important.
My vote is No.
But I still think he has had an amazing career and should get honored by the Red Sox.
Here is a tougher question:
Does Tim Wakefield belong in the MLB Hall of Fame?
My answer is Yes, mainly bc he is like the last great knuckleballer + his longevity.
I'm not even sure why this was even asked
A significant contributer to the Sox during his tenure in Boston? Yes. A Hall of Famer? Not even close. Also, if memory serves, I don’t think Boston retires numbers unless you are elected to the MLB HOF but I could be wrong.
I think there are two more reasonable and interesting debate questions. First, who currently on the roster, could make the HOF if he retired today? Second, who could be realistically considered if their career continues on its current path? Regarding the first question, I will say no one. Regarding the 2nd question I will throw nominations out there for Gonzo, Pedroia, Ortiz, Beckett and Lester. FWIW, I don’t think any make it but it’s not outside the realm of possibilities any of the five could be there.
Pesky is not in HOF
So there’s that. Secondly, I’d have to say that 2-3 of the names you mentioned, if their careers continue the way they’re going, could have a shot at the Hall. This is assuming appropriate milestones are met, etc. In case you’re wondering I think that Pedey, Gonzo, and maybe Lester could one day land in the hall. Just my opinion.

We were all a little bit right
You need to be part of the MLB HOF to have your Red Sox number retired although they made an exception for Pesky. The Boston HOF doesn’t have that requirement. Therefore, Varitek could (and likely will based on other inductees) be part of the Boston Red Sox HOF but won’t haave his number retired unless they make a Pesky exception.

No.
But I find it somewhat sad that HOF membership seems to be a numbers game. Intangibles, to use a loaded word, should be considered as well. Maybe ‘Tek doesn’t have the offensive stats and hasn’t passed the milestones that would make him a lock, but he has caught four no-hitters, and he was the captain of two WS winning teams, and he did smack A-Roid in the face, so he should at least get an honorable mention. After all, it’s the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Surpassed Statistical Thresholds.
"If your happiness depends on Boston winning or losing, you have to get a life." Manny Somebody-or-other
Smacking A-Roid in the face isn't a qualification for the Hall of Fame
Yes, it’s one of the all-time great moments in baseball history, and that counts for something. But things like that are at best tie-breakers for borderline cases. Tek doesn’t even make it to that level, even with his intangibles.
My thoughts on the topic:
NESN needs to come up with better (and more realistic) poll questions.
Voting currently has 51 percent giving him a thumbs up. NESN readers need a little dose of realism, too.
