Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

To make room for Erik Bedard on the #RedSox 40-man roster, the team transferred Clay Buchholz to the 60-day disabled list.

Per Brian MacPherson. Buchholz will be eligible to come off the 60-day on August 16 (last pitched June 16).

Have to admit... it was my first reaction as well.

Then I saw August 16th and thought… oh, that’s not much longer…

Miller

But pitch Bedard Thursday vs. Indians, pushing back Lester one day so it’s Lester-Lackey-Beckett vs. MFY.

Miller

At least with Wakefield, he can go on a hot streak with the knuckleball. Miller doesn’t go on hot streaks.

Not only that, but Wake is much scarier in the pen

than he is in the rotation, as far as I’m concerned.

Remember when he was a closer?

I mean, I know… not a recent thing, but it was done.

I have to think about Wake in the HOF context again… you know, 200 wins isn’t enough and he certainly didn’t close as many games as say, John Smoltz did. However, his willingness to do whatever was asked of him with the Sox for as long as he’s played here, as someone else said – the last “great” knuckleballer, and significant success (two World Series rings… and counting).

Is there an outside chance?

for Red Sox HOF?

possibly , but I don’t think Cooperstown wants the equivalent to mediocre utility player

Phil Rizuto?

LOL – I’m not really disagreeing.

’Love Wake. And he definitely deserves a spot in the RS HoF.

He also will probable get some deserved votes for Cooperstown when his time comes. But I predict he will and should come up just short.

On topic – I agree with the thought that Wake will be retained over Miller and is more likely to be useful out of the pen.

I did like seeing the 8 Ks and only 1 BB today from Miller. The 10 hits sucked. But 8 Ks in 5.2 innings can do a lot towards neutralizing hits and walks and that’s why the White Sox only got 3 runs out of all that. If he could consistently get strikeouts at that rate, that would really help his case.

He'll come up more than "just short"

And that’s fine. We can love and appreciate Tim Wakefield for who and what he is without him going to the Hall of Fame.

Don't underestimate the "We just like the guy!" vote!

Wake will probably get more votes than he deserves on paper.

Just like many other players have before him.

But I agree it won’t be enough to get him in.

I hope Buchh is back by Sept 1

But then who’s spot does HE take? At that point he can have Miller’s I suppose. I just hope Buchh comes back healthy but he needs at least 2-3 starts to be ready for the playoffs. Don’t you think?

Yeah

Hopefully the first two specialists he saw were not dead wrong. I tell ya, health care these days.

by steel sox on Jul 31, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

didn't those guys do an MRI?

An MRI would reveal a herniated disc. I’m not an expert, but it seems pretty straightforward to me.

Twitter: @BoldandBrash

by BoldandBrash on Jul 31, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

And another question,

they have said that his back only bothers him when he pitches. If it were a disc, wouldn’t his back be hurting all the time? I have never had a disc problem before so I don’t know.

by dja9783 on Jul 31, 2011 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

he can pitch off of flat ground an it doesn't bother him,

but throwing off of a mound is what bothers him. At least that’s what I gathered. If it’s a disc problem, he’s done, but if it’s muscular he could be back soon. If they determine he can’t do any more damage, maybe they can give him a shot and he’ll have to pitch through pain.

When I had my disc issues I could not even walk

so if it’s a disc and it only hurts when he pitches I will be surprised.

Gulp?

That could be pretty good. Especially with that offense. Really, just losing the Wakefield/Miller/Weiland portion of things will do wonders.

We had

Beckett/Dice/Schilling/Wake in 07

by BobZupcic on Jul 31, 2011 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Was Dice really #2 in 2007?

I mean, I recall getting to see Schilling’s last game pitched, as Game 2 of the 2007 World Series in Fenway… wasn’t it Beckett/Schilling/Dice/Wake?

And, of course, as much as I love Wake… isn’t this a different Wake today?

However… your main point is well taken… with this offense, those four could still win a World Series. I just hope it’s Lester/Beckett/Buchholz/Bedard – with Aceves/Lackey available for the playoff version of the Voltron starter.

by AlohaSox on Jul 31, 2011 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

yes and we also had a cupcake in the WS

ALDS went : Beckett-Dice-Schill

ALCS went: Beckett-Schill-Dice-Wake-Beckett-Schill-Dice

WS went: Beckett-Schill-Dice-Lester

So, Dice was #2 and then got rearranged. Oh, and if Buch and Bedard are healthy going into the playoffs, I’m not sure Bedard doesn’t start over Clay.

that and how many starts will Buch have made before the playoffs?

IF Bedard keeps pitching the way he is, I think it should be awfully hard to change Tito’s mind.

by BoldandBrash on Jul 31, 2011 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Assuming no Buchholz, what would be the ALDS (5-game series) 3-man rotation?

Beckett, Lester, Lackey; or
Beckett, Lester, Bedard?

I think it’s totally up in the air now.

I’m assuming Bedard knocks the rust off his DL stint really soon and pitches as before, in which case he, as a LHP, likely gets the nod over Lackey. It sort of depends on the left vs. right-handedness strength of the opponents.

by dsharp on Jul 31, 2011 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

Beard hands down

If he’s healthy, he can be better than Buchholz.

Well, as of right now

we’ve still got a better rotation than the Yankees, although the Rangers look really dangerous all of a sudden with that new bullpen.

Just worried about Buchh. Hey, remember when we were worried about Dice K?

For a trade deadline that saw...

An ace get traded for a huge haul, two good OFers dealt to contenders from the same team, Beltran leave to SF, a deal that fell apart at 2 in the morning, and a three team trade for Bedard…

…This trade deadline seemed kind of boring.

Still simmering a bit.

I must have missed the nuclear blow up, but I certainly put my two cents in at some point.

by AlohaSox on Jul 31, 2011 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

It's part of a much bigger debate though

on how you approach team building. Aviles helps us now, possibly, but has no potential and isn’t very good. He may be able to hit lefties well. Navarro has put up solid numbers in AAA as a 23 year old shortstop, but doesn’t help us much now. Do you risk the latter becoming a useful part after he leaves for the possibility of there being a single useful situation for the former?

by Sean O on Aug 1, 2011 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

future

how much future value would Navarro have for the Red Sox?

He’s blocked by better players at 3B, SS, 2B & the OF. He’d get traded eventually. And what if his minor league numbers took a slump next year and his value dropped? Or we kept him up as a backup and he continued to post blah offensive numbers at the MLB level?

His trade value now, backed up by at least semi-decent AAA numbers, and impinged by only a short sample of sub-par MLB numbers is possibly as high as it might ever be for the Sox.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Aug 1, 2011 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

you know, I never watched a ton of him in AAA or earlier

so I’m not really qualified to say this, because obviously his swing in the majors was not the one that got him an 830 OPS in AAA, but I would think that they probably decided his swing was not going to translate in the majors.

He’s pretty certainly the biggest piece we gave up, which is weird for Aviles. At the same time, Aviles isn’t going to be huge for the team but probably fits more of our current needs. I’d say if Aviles can make that small difference, we’re pretty legitimate world series contenders and the benefit outweighs the risk. I dunno, we’ll have to see how he develops, but for now, I’m willing to put my faith in the player development people.

by wolf9309 on Aug 1, 2011 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think I regret trading Navarro away... I just think Aviles wasn't worth getting back.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have packaged him somehwere (and I’d agree with mmmmm’s assertion that his value might be as high as it will ever be), but I also agree with Sean… what value does Aviles provide to us in return for “selling high” on Navarro.

I agree with trading him at peak value (potentially)… but get something of value back, which I don’t think Aviles is.

Again, if he pulls off a play like Roberts’ steal of second in the 2004 ALCS, I’ll be first in line for some crow… but right now it looks to me like we just gave Navarro away for nothing.
