Boston Globe: Buchholz will not return any time soon
A rather scary story from the Globe:
As the non-waiver trade deadline approaches, how the Red Sox proceed could be influenced by the growing evidence that Clay Buchholz will not be ready to pitch any time soon.
The righthander, out since June 17 with a muscle strain in his lower back, didn’t even respond positively when asked whether he would return this season.
“I mean, I think we’re doing everything we can to get to that point,” he said. “It’s tough on me. Just for that fact that I thought it was going to be 15-day stint [on the disabled list] and it would be over and done with and it hasn’t been that..
The two main things I have read about the Sox before the trade deadline center around either a right handed bat or starting pitching.
Personally, I thing the starting pitching is a much more pressing need.

The question, of course, being whom do you trade for?
I know there have been reports about us sniffing around Garza and Kuroda. Garza is under control for a while, whereas Kurado is an FA after the year, so he’d likely be much cheaper.

I'm torn
Go cheap or go long term? Apparently the payroll is tight, but we’re going to be forced to bring someone in next year anyway with Dice still out and Wake maybe hanging up the cleats. Furthermore there is the roster logjam that I only recently became aware of, we have a good number of guys hitting rule 5 eligibility at the end of the year who we really won’t want to expose, we’re probably going to have to get rid of a couple guys anyway because that problem is only going to get worse, maybe go big or go home, if we offer enough talent the other team will likely pay a large chunk of the salary to make it possible.

I'm not a big Iglesias fan
But the Sox seem to be. I don’t think they’ll move him.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Anderson and Bowden
Have little value.
Ranaudo, Middlebrooks, Brentz, Boagaerts, Head, Jacobs, and Reddick I would keep off limits, maybe bending on Head and Jacobs in the right deal. Everyone else is fair game.

Certainly Bowden/Anderson are not headline or even secondary or tertiary pieces...
… but they’re reasonable throw-ins for a deal with a farm-weak NL team.

That would be reasonable
but if we could only get back the other part of the Beckett trade…
According to Gammons, Kuroda won't waive his NTC for an East Coast team.

Whomever is cheaper
personally, i would rather have Kuroda, but thats bc I just cant watch Garza and his spitting.
DLowe is a longshot
He drank his way out of Boston and is due to make $15 million next year.
From what I’ve heard, Garza isn’t available. He makes less than $6 million and won’t be a FA until 2014. I’m sure the Cubs would be much more willing to trade Dempster or Zambrano because both are older, more expensive, not as good as Garza, and signed through next year.
Kuroda is interesting. He makes $12 million this year, so LA might want to move the money. If that’s the case, the Sox may not have to give up as much for him.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Kuroda
makes $8 million this year + a $4 million signing bonus. My understanding is that the signing team is completely responsible for the signing bonus, not the team he’s traded to (so it’s kind of an incentive to not try to shop him). Also, he has a no trade clause and has said that he will require additional compensation to waive it. So the last few months of an $8 million dollar contract + extra compensation may be more.
That said, if they pursue a starter, I think he’s my favorite out there.
I agree about Kuroda
His need for “additional compensation” to waive his no-trade clause has me curious/worried, but I think he’s the best option in terms of cost in money/prospects. He’ll fit in as our number 3/4 while Buchholz is gone and if he gets hot maybe he can even start Game 4 in a playoff series.
As much as it would be amazing to see someone like Ubaldo Jimenez in a Sox uniform, I think the cost in prospects would be just too high, especially after making the Gonzalez trade. Not sure Garza is even available, have we heard anything other than “Sox looking at Garza”? Anything from the Cubs side of things? I don’t think we have.

Garza is interesting
He’s pitched in the AL East so he’s got that. This year’s peripherals look out of whack with his career. He’s got two more years of Arbitration
The Cubs gave up a ton for Garze
and will want the same for him. I wonder if Boston has enough to give to get him, particularly sice Garza is under a pretty favorable contract.
I wonder if it is realistic to get him. Having seen him in Tampa, I am all for it.
Bedard has also pitched in the Beast.
And looks to be somewhat back on track. He’s also significantly cheaper.

Bedard is one of those guys who's a great pitcher
but not a guy I would look to shore up an injury-riddled rotation because there’s a pretty good chance he’ll be joining the rest of the rotation on the DL.
This makes pitching the utmost priority
please, shop our prospects, except Reddick and anyone drafted the past two years.
I’ll be fine with giving up a relative haul for someone who will give us a strong starter. Hell, I don’t care if it’s for one year or many years, just get someone who can pitch!
The Red Sox suck, and I am the dirt that was sucked in, I am a dirty.
The Rockies are asking for Montero, two of the B’s, and Ivan Nova in return from the Yankees, so for us that’s roughly what, Kalish, Lavarnway and Ranuado and a throw in or two? Too much for a pitcher who has something funky going on with his stuff.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
For us?
To match Betances, Banuelos, Montero, and Nova we’d have to trade Ranaudo, Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, Head, Kalish/Reddick, Coyle.
Seriously. MFY would never give up that much in one trade, though.

not even convinced that's an equivalent
just because at least two, probably three of those guys could be popped right onto the major league team
well there's no deal
the report isn’t that Montero wouldn’t be involved, just that he wouldn’t be the centerpiece. So there’d have to be at least one player the Rockies view as more valuable than Montero.
What deal?
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
Think he's
talking about Jimenez to Yankees.
But why would Colorado trade Ubaldo for a few prospects without Montero?
"Marquis Teague sucks!"
-Bryce Cotten
I assume he's talking about a report on MLBtraderumors
that Montero won’t be the centerpiece of a deal. But it stems from this Jon Heyman tweet:
says person w/ ties to rox: "montero will not be the centerpiece of (ubaldo) deal.’’ theyll take him but not at best piece
So it’s not that they won’t require someone as valuable as Montero, quite the opposite. It’s that they don’t see him as valuable enough to be the centerpiece. Which makes sense if they don’t view him as a catcher, especially as they’re an NL team.
Its also common sense
Martin is a bust, Posada is done, why would the Yankees trade a position they need just so they can go on the market and fill the void in the off season. Yankees are not hurting for prospects, plus I would assume any Ubaldo deal has arms going back to Colorado so they can save face with a Rockies fan base who loves Ubaldo.
Its a similar deal to Jake Peavy going to the White Sox for the three young arms.
I like Wandy Rodriguez
I’m probably forgetting something obvious, but he is getting older (not sure about the contract situation) has a decent 3.5 ERA and can eat innings and help save the bullpen.
"Marquis Teague sucks!"
-Bryce Cotten
The only problem is
Ed Wade is asking for the same package the Rockies are asking for Ubaldo Jimenez. Honestly, among the options available, Bedard and Jackson seem like the best options. Both could be had relatively cheaply, and can be decent 3/4s.

I think the White Sox want Offense for Jackson
They have extra pitching and want offense to compete for this year. At least, that’s what I’ve heard.
If Kuroda is unwilling to come here (and so far that’s just a rumor), Jackson may, indeed, be our best bet,
by South Coast Ghost on Jul 17, 2011 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
In the right deal....
I kinda sorta think that we don’t have any problem sending some offense their way.

To gauge opinions
Anyone else really questioning the “out for the season” alarmism?
I mean, they don’t even print the question. And then really twist the whole idea to suggest it’s a negative response.
Seems to me like he’s saying “We’re doing everything we can to get me out there ASAP”

From more in the article
and I didn’t include it in the main article because I don’t know what the rules are here about quotes from newspapers (an aside, I used to represent one, and newspapers are getting screwed by people posting so much copyrighted material. There are limites to fair use….)
Once Buchholz does return to the mound, it could take as long as three weeks before he is ready to pitch in a major league game. He will need a throwing program to regain arm strength followed by a minor league rehabilitation assignment.
So if he got on the mound in a week, the earliest he would return is mid-August
More probable than not that he comes back, but I think the main point is that there is significant uncertainty about the timetable for his return.
I read WEEI and the Herald's report on the same interview
and neither painted such a dire condition. Neither mentioned “out for the season” but it did sound like he was 4 weeks away.
yeah this is almost certainly one of those things
where they were asking about timetables and he was just saying they didn’t have a particular timetable- he wouldn’t set a date so he wouldn’t commit to being back this season
It feels like it is a bit of the Sox saying that Buch is ready
and Buch not thinking he’s ready yet. Maybe a bit of ’10 Ellsbury going on here.
it doesn’t change the fact that a quality starter available for this year and next would be at the top of the list for acquisitions. I don’t have any faith in Miller, so that ’12 spot at the back of the rotation is wide open.
I would do almost anything for Garza.
I don't really feel a need for a trade.
I believe Buchholz will pitch again this season. Maybe not soon but Weiland was called up not too long ago. He struggled at first but he settled down despite being ejected. We also have Doubront who may not be the answer but he is another option…he resumed pitching not too long ago
Lester will be back soon so we’ll have Beckett, Lackey, Lester, Wake, and someone else who could be Weiland, Miller, Millwood…., Doubront or even Aceves. That’s already a lot of options.
But I wouldn’t mind getting someone like Ryan Dempster since he’s older and the Cubs may want to move him
"Remember, it's not over until the fat lady drops one."
Buchholz played catch today, for the record.
Was feeling a lot better.

Is the next step
for Buchholz to got to a training center in Arizona….
As long as the Red Sox stay in 1st in the AL East
or even 2nd but 1st in the WC, they really dont have to do anything rash. Hopefully, the Yankees will pound the Rays this series and put them to bed now. Then we can fight it out with the equally injured MFYs.
I feel like this article is slanted towards doom and gloom.
Just look at the choice of the words in the title and it questions if he’s done for the year. It would be great to add another pitcher, but as the post above me said, we don’t need to force a move. The sox are 7 up on the Rays, who are 2nd in the wild card. I don’t think either Buchholz or Lester’s injuries are that serious.
