Too Many All-Stars, Or Not Enough (Or, How Screwed Over Is Dustin Pedroia This Year?)
A piece of mine from Baseball Nation on why 85 All-Stars isn't as many as it sounds like, especially when you consider Boston's own Dustin Pedroia somehow isn't on the roster.

Interestingly
offensively he is doing about as well (or just a shade less well) RELATIVE to the league as last year.
Pedroia is sick.
He’s the best defensive 2B in MLB. He leads MLB 2B in wOBA, is 3rd in OPS, and 7th in HR. Oh, and he’s stolen 16 bases.

It's amazing how overlooked Pedroia has been this year.
I fanposted about it a few weeks ago. Since then, he has been even better. Amazingly, he now is better than Cano this year…even offensively. Here is how it stacks up:
Pedroia wOBA 0.376 Total: (Road: 0.374 Home: 0.379) wRC+ 136
Cano wOBA 0.373 wRC+ 135
Let’s not even get into defense. Right now by fWAR Bautista is the clear WAR leader, followed by Ellsbury and AGonz at 4.8, then Pedroia and Granderson at 4.7 each. Only Pedroia is not an all-star.
It is amazing that a player that won a ROY award and a MVP he didn’t really deserve can then get overlooked so badly. It is likely largely due to his slow start.
Yeah, his slow start was what did it. He's been on fire the last month.
How good is Howie Kendrick? Since we haven’t seen him in months, I haven’t kept up but he seems to be the guy who stole Pedey adn Zobrist’s place. Cano is certainly worthy, he’s a great player.
Kendrick: .364 wOBA, .822 OPS, 8 HR
Pedroia: .376 wOBA, .836 OPS, 11 HR

Well I think a significant part of the problem
is that voting starts really early in the season. Pedroia looked awful for a decent amount of time there, which coincided with when the voting started. His numbers look great now, but they didn’t through the whole voting period. I’d guess that if all the voting happened last week, he’d be on the team.
Suggestion:
a significant part of the problem is that there is voting

Pedroia should be there
If baseball is a numbers game and the numbers speak for themselves…Pedey has better numbers and should be there. This whole “every team needs to be there” stuff is crap.

Let's just hope Pedroia keeps getting underestimated
all the way through October.

+1
I might like this better than him as an All Star. We all know what happens when people underestimate Dustin.

Yeah, but he still probably sucks batting lead off ...

we should probably just discuss how terrible he is at batting second
seeing how Ells is doing himself a spectacular job this year.
