Rumors are beginning to surface about Ethier wanting to come to Boston. With the current Red Sox RF situation. His bat would be a welcome addition to the lineup and a starting outfield of Crawford, Ellsbury, and Ethier for the forseeable future would be amazing.
But the Red Sox lineup is stacked with lefties already. Could/should the Red Sox look into investing their money and prospects into another middle of the lineup lefty?
With Ethier, the Sox lineup would look something like this:
1. Ellsbury - CF - L
2. Pedroia - 2B - R
3. Gonzalez - 1B - L
4. Youkilis - 3B - R
5. Ortiz - DH - L
6. Ethier - RF - L
7. Crawford - LF - L
8. - Lowrie/Scutaro - SS - S/R
9. Salty/Varitek - C - S
That's a juicy 1-7, but 5 out of the first 7 batters being lefty for years could potentially be a problem. So the question is. Will the Sox go after Ethier at the deadline with the Dodgers in all types of trouble this year (11 game out of the divison race)? Should they? And what would it cost to acquire him via trade?
I would think the package would have to start with Kalish or Reddick and would probably include Iglesias, Middlebrooks, Ranaudo, or Weiland. Personally, if the package is Kalish+Ranaudo+mid level prospect (Che-Hsuan Lin/Brandon Workman), I say no. But if the deal is more towards Reddick+Weiland+slightly better prospect (Kolbrin Vitek/Alex Wilson), I would pull the trigger.
What do you guys think?
