my knowledge in the contract/arbitration department is pretty limited, but i figure this topic is interesting enough to create a post:
the basic question i have is: do we have team control over miller beyond 2012?
information collection:
contracts till now (according to cots http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004/12/boston-red-sox.html):
signed a major league contract after being drafted: 2006-2009
renewed contract in 2010
signed minor league contract with boston in for 2011 + 2012 club option
service time: 2.132
am i correct to assume that since his service time is so low (with all that up and demotion/recall action) that he will be under team control until he service time is >6? or does he become a free agent once he has been on a major league roster for 6 calendar years?
how does the major league contract come in play? cots uses the phrase renew instead of re-sign, is that because of the major league contract? where is the difference?
miller was called up on 06/19/11 the day of game #71 let's assume he plays the rest of the season in the majors. thats 91 games remaining -> that would add 0.562 years to service time makeing it 2.694 at the end of 2011. assume miller doesn't reach the 3 years service time in 2012 (beacuse of injury or whatever) would he be signable for league minimum? or will he just become a free agent?
it's actually pretty hard to find information about this, but i hope there are some posters who know that kind of stuff
