Bill Hall Released

No big surprise that Hall couldn't cut it as an everyday player with Houston cutting ties, eating his entire salary as well as the $250K '12 buyout. Could the Astros bad signing be the Sox gain? I would consider bringing back Hall in the same role he performed well in last year, as the last man off the bench. He brings flexibility and a right handed bat, two things that the current roster lacks. McDonald was only getting sporadic AB's when healthy. The bench would start with Tek, Hall and Cameron. Short term, Scutaro gets the final spot. However, if you can get good value for him, you broker a trade and replace him with Navarro or Sutton. Carrying Hall, giving him one start a week against a lefty makes a lot more sense to me than keeping McDonald as a 5th outfielder.

But with Navarro

Why not call up the kid when he’s healthy? Save the money.

What money would be saved?

Who does Navarro replace? Sutton and Reddick are making league minimum. Scutaro would be a cost savings, however, you would need to find trade partner to jettison Scutaro. If it’s Hall, I’m not advocating picking up any of his remaining $3M salary, I would only do this if if were at or very near league minimum.

No.

He’s versatile in that he really sucks at a lot of different positions and his right handed bat also sucks. He may embody the sort of player we need, but he is not the actual one we need. Just get Navarro up. He plays OF, he plays IF and at least his IF defense is actually good and his bat has the potential to be very good. Plus we already have him on the 40 man so only an active roster move would need to be made.

Let's be clear, he sucked so bad the ASTROS said 'dude you suck'.

Navarro

I’m OK with Navarro over Hall, however, I think he makes a lot more sense on the roster with Scutaro gone. I don’t see the value of bringing Navarro up to get 5 AB’s or less a week as the 5th outfielder and 2nd utility infielder. I’d rather him get regular AB’s at AAA until/if Scutaro is traded, using him as the primary utility infielder (with maybe Sutton as the 2nd) and as a 5th outfielder.

I think if Sutton could play outfield, he'd be a better option than Hall.

I’m just eager to keep Hall off the roster, he’s just not a good player, the only thing he can do well hit HRs and then very very little after that to the point that even with the HRs, his bat provides negative value.

No

He’s probably the worst bench player of all time. He can’t field well anywhere. He can’t hit situationally. He swings at everything and misses most of the time. He can’t bunt. That’s pretty much everything you want out of a bench player. However, he can hit some HR, but that skill is best used over the course of many games, like in a starter’s role.

eh his role wouldn't be of a frequent bench player

It would be like Darnell McDonald- you don’t play good defense or offense bust maybe you’ll get a home run every rare once in a while. You’ll be the 5th outfielder and the 6th infielder. If he’d take that role, I’d appreciate the versatility, just because I know if someone gets hurt, we really have no one else we can go to for outfielders. I honestly think this is not a bad idea, as much as I didn’t like Billy last year.

I like him as a depth move, but he'd have to be in AAA

and I’d rather try to find someone that doesn’t use the all or nothing approach. He’d actually be better as a frequent bench player because he’d get more time for his power to show up. There’s a low chance he hits a HR in one random game he’s put in, but he’ll have a bunch in 100+ games. He may have a better chance of hitting a HR, but that chance than other bench players, but that chance is still really low.The guy is terrible at defense everywhere, whether that’s because he never settled in to one position or not, he’s still terrible everywhere. I’d try to exhaust every other option before getting Hall, but McDonald has been pretty terrible this year.

Yankees

Seem most likely to get him.

Eh

It we payed him league minimum to be a bench player, I wouldn’t be pissed. But you also wouldn’t see me breaking out the party hats and bubbly for it either. He was serviceable and somewhat useful during last year’s… is there a word that combines the properties of a catastrophe and a debacle? Catastrophacle? He didn’t help all that much, but he was certainly not the embodiment of suck and posted a barely noticeable 0.7 WAR. All that said, if he ends up on the Yankees, I may just bust out the bubbly because he’s definitely not very good.
