Red Sox Minor Lines 6/25, 6/26: Greenville Unleashed
6/25
Pawtucket L 5-6
Yamaico Navarro: 2-5, K
Ryan Lavarnway: 1-5, HR
-OPS now up to 1.083. The question becomes: where to put him should they deem him ready?
Luis Exposito: 1-4, 2 K
Jose Iglesias: 0-4, 2 K
Jason Rice: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Franklin Morales: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Portland L 5-9
Jeremy Hazelbaker: 0-4, BB, K, SB
Alex Hassan: 0-3, BB, K
Chih-Hsien Chiang: 1-4, HR, K
-Chiang has kept up his excellent start all through June now, so it's time to start giving him a follow. Chiang's left behind a career full of .700-something OPS to turn in a big-power 2011 season. He's already got 12 homers and 24 other extra basehits to give him a .611 slugging percentage to go with a decent .357 OBP. While Chiang is still new to the outfield, he should be able to stick there well enough in the long-term.
Tim Federowicz: 2-4, 2B
Reynaldo Rodriguez: 0-4, 2 K
Oscar Tejeda: 1-3, BB
Bobby Jenks: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Stephen Fife: 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, E
Salem L 1-2
Kolbrin Vitek: 2-4, K
Bryce Brentz: 0-4, K
Chris Hernandez: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Greenville W 5-2
Not so much the "unleashed" game.
Sean Coyle: 0-4, 2 K, SB, E
-Coyle really hasn't been quite the same since his early injuries.
Miles Head: 0-4, K
Christian Vazquez: 3-4, 2B, HR
Henry Ramos: 0-3, BB
David Renfroe: 2-3, 2B, BB
-Renfroe has seen some solid improvements in his game in each month so far this season.
Lowell L 4-6
Keury De La Cruz: 3-5, SB
Garin Cecchini: 1-5
Travis Shaw: 2-5, K
Boss Moanaroa: 0-4, BB, 2 K, E
Madison Younginer: 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
GCL Red Sox W 5-4
Kendrick Perkins: 3-4, K
Jose Vinicio: 0-4, 2 K
Oscar Perez: 1-3, 3B, BB
6/26
Pawtucket L 5-7
Che-Hsuan Lin: 2-5, K
Yamaico Navarro: 1-4, BB
Lars Anderson: 1-4, BB, 2 K
Ryan Lavarnway: 2-4, BB
Luis Exposito: 1-4
Jose Iglesias: 3-4, 2B
-Extra base hit #3!
Felix Doubront: 6 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, E
Michael Bowden: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Portland L 3-7
Alex Hassan: 0-4
Chih-Hsien Chiang: 0-4, 2 K
Reynaldo Rodriguez: 0-4, 2 K
Oscar Tejeda: 1-2, BB, SB
Cesar Cabral: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 HR
Salem L 1-4
Kolbrin Vitek: 2-4, K
Bryce Brentz: 1-4, HR, K
-Brentz has as many homers as he has singles in Salem. More troubling, he has zero walks through his first 44 at bats.
Greenville W 9-5
Miles Head: 2-5, 2 2B, K, 2 E
Brandon Jacobs: 2-5, HR, 2 K
-Back
Christian Vazquez: 2-4, HR, BB
-to-back
Xander Bogaerts: 1-5, HR, 3 K, E
-to-back homers for Greenville. Now stop striking out, Xander!
David Renfroe: 1-4, BB, 3 K
Manny Rivera: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
-It's not been 5 starts since Rivera allowed eight homers in four games. Since that, not a one.
Juan Rodriguez: 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 Er, 1 BB, 0 K
Lowell W 4-1
Keury De La Cruz: 0-4, 2 K
Garin Cecchini: 0-3, BB, K, SB
Will Middlebrooks: 1-2, HR, BB, SB
-Good to see Will on his way back. And rehabbing with style, no less.
Boss Moanaroa: 1-4, 3 K
Seth Schwindenhammer: 0-3, 3 K
-The streak continues!

too bad
Lavarnway can’t field his position-seems like a beast with the bat.
Lavarnway
It’s great he’s having so much success in AAA but there’s no need to rush him. If the Sox have determined he’s not a catcher then they should try him elsewhere but my guess is they haven’t made that determination yet. They don’t need him at catcher or DH in the big leagues now so he’ll probably stay in Pawtucket for a while and hopefully improve his catching skills.
Follow me on Twitter! It'll be super awesome fun! @mattymatty2000
Just how bad are his catching skills?
I have heard everything from slightly below average to horrible (and horrible but improving-which is something at least). I haear more reports on the “horrible” side…
Over at Soxprospects.com
the only good thing you’ll hear is his throws to 2nd. Everything else seem below average to simply bad. Very stiff, very bad at framing pitches.
I personally haven’t seen him play in person, but some say he’s slower than AGon so he can’t be an OF. Maybe the Sox should try him at 1st base?

Sickles had a piece on him today (or recently?)
and painted a somewhat better picture.
Didn't Lavarnway only just get to AAA?
I’m glad he’s doing great, but I’d like to see him sustain things a bit longer than 11 games before we start talking about what to do about promoting him.
So...
If 0-4 with 4Ks is a golden sombrero, is 0-3 with 3Ks a Schwindenbrero?
