The Over The Monster Podcast - Episode 7

It's that time of the week again. The time when Marc Normandin and I just happen to talk Red Sox and, like wow, someone, like, totally records it! Then they put music snippets in at appropriate moments and stick the thing on iTunes! Totally weird.

This week we're talking A's with Beane Ball's Jason Wojciechowski. But first, Marc and I go over the Matsuzaka situation and what his injury might mean for the pitching staff going forward. We talk Carl Crawford and Marc goes over some interesting information he's uncovered about Crawford's return to relevance.

Then we bring on Jason and cover Josh Willingham's stubby legs, Kevin Kouzmanoff's odd brand of effective defense, and what the A's have been unable to cobble together for almost half a decade now (an effective offense).

As always, you can find us on iTunes, where you can rate us and write nasty things about us that we'll read and cry about silently when we're alone. However, we'd prefer you said nice things. We're very sensitive. By subscribing to the podcast on iTunes you'll automatically download the latest episodes as they are birthed from my unwilling computer. Alternately, you can go directly to our host site and listen or download it there. Or if you don't like all that commitment, you can just click the podcast player below and listen to it that way. We make it so easy, even your uncle Ted could do it, and he's the one who likes Dane Cook.

Thanks for listening. We're always open to your comments, so please feel free. You know where to leave 'em.

No, you're correct

But when Red Sox Beacon came to OTM, we brought the podcast with us. So it’s now the OTM podcast, episode 7 (when technically it is episode 1)

I tried listening to it

but it was all in some garbled alien language. I think they were talking about abducting our cows.

Is Adam Dunn really a foot taller than Youkilis?

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Quick question on the Wake/Aceves platoon

Looking at their splits (Aceves career splits are a small sample size), and going by xFIP, neither are significantly better or worse against righties and lefties, how would they determine who starts what game if that were to happen?

That, I do not entirely know

Francona would probably make it much more specific, or even avoid throwing the knuckler out there on days where it was too windy. I wonder if both would need to be ready to start each time.

eesh that would be scary, 25-man lineup-wise

I’d probably guess more than anything else it was his way of saying “I’m not going to tell you yet”

Maybe!

The matchups would have more to do with using one of them in relief, so the other one is available as a starter. Both of them are used to the hybrid game by now, anyways.

I'll check this out soon

Also, I have a request: do you guys think that it would be possible to either:

a) resize the articles themselves so they look smaller or
b) have just a paragraph or two below the picture before the jump?

I’m just asking because when every day so far there’s been lots of new good articles (yay!) but they push the old ones down so that I can’t find them anymore (boo!). Yes I know you can go to the archive but I was just wondering if that would be possible, I think it would look better.

Dane Cook Projections

I was thinking as I read your opening paragraph that it sounded like Dane Cook.

And then you bash Dane Cook at the end of the story. Tell us the truth…you love Dane Cook, don’t you?

I don't think I've seen Francona saying that Dice-K doesn't need surgery at any point

I might have missed something. The only quote I’ve seen is Francona saying that Dice-K wasn’t going to Japan to get surgery when he left the team and that they don’t know he needs surgery. The source in Japan, from what I can tell is saying that he definitely will get TJ surgery, but Yocum has not released information about what he’s said specifically, either directly or through sources.

Mike Petraglia tweeted about it yesterday

“Francona says nothing has changed with Matsuzaka: ‘Go about it non-operatively first. Seems like it makes sense to me’ #redsox”

Looking over Marc's shoulder...

Yeah! That!

Follow me on Twitter! It'll be super awesome fun! @mattymatty2000

oh yeah. One thing I don't like about Twitter:

140 characters pretty much forces you to remove any context. Here’s the quote:

Diagnostically, everything is kind of the same. We have to figure how to best go about this. The player or pitcher has to have some opinion, too. But I think you’re always going to go about it non-operatively, first. That just seems like it makes sense to me.

Which sounds a lot less like him saying that they won’t operate. Certainly not saying they will operate at all, but it sounds like he just doesn’t know what they’ll do yet.
