Definitely.
Hopefully McDonald/Reddick/Cameron can fill in for a few weeks without it being too much of a problem.

Fixed.
Hopefully McDonald/Reddick/-Cameron- Lin/Hassan/or anyone but Cameron can fill in for a few weeks without it being too much of a problem.
Crap, that didn't work. Needed to use Preview.
Intended that to read:
Hopefully McDonald/Reddick/ Cameron Lin/Hassan/or anyone but Cameron can fill in for a few weeks without it being too much of a problem.
I hope Reddick gets regular playing time in LF/RF for the time being
A bit of a look at him in regular MLB playing time could be valuable.
Good point.
I just want Cameron to go ahead and retire at this point. I really supported the signing before 2010’s season, but between the injuries last year and his performance at the plate, on the basepaths and in the field, I think it’s time to let him go.
If he really wants to keep playing, trade him somewhere for a PTBNL.
are you a clutch carl supporter Marc?

You will surrender before the 2011 Boston Red Sox.
Why wouldn't I root for one of the better players in baseball when he's on the Sox?

Lots of people here are not big supporters of him
I think its mostly becuse of the contract.

or because he's provided little if any positive value overall.
I think the casual fan wouldn’t care that much about the contract. If he hit .300, stole 40 bases, and the team was in first place, people would love him. However, somebody will always say that he never lived up to his contract, and there are also the people who just don’t like his game.

The contract was terrible to begin with
there’s no way his sort of player (and by his sort I mean a light-hitting speedster whose main value comes from defense, don’t put words in my mouth.) deserves a 142 million dollar contract. Especially not in Fenway Park.

The contract is not terrible
its what FA outfielders got in 2011, which will go up in 2012. And in 3 years he we be a deal.
Also, just so everyone knows, THERE IS NO SALARY CAP in MLB. So why quibble about money that is not yours?
BECAUSE THERE IS A LIMITED AMOUNT OF MONEY
If Theo gives out stupid contracts, that’s money he can’t spend on other FAs later or player draft/development. Crawford’s contract might not be able to be directly linked to not being able to sign a FA, but it still could.

Alternatives
They let Bay rightfully walk, opening up an outfield spot. Cameron came to Boston with a great defensive reputation hitting 18 or more HR’s in 10 of the 11 seasons including 49 in his two previous seasons with the Brewers. Short of passing on Lackey and signing Holliday (and beating the Cards 7/$119M offer), what move would you have made instead?
I never said it was a bad contract (it very well could be though),
I said that everybody has to spend with some discretion, even the Yankees.
There were alternative to signing an albatross contract. You can say they aren’t better players than Crawford, and they might not be. However, we signed the best pitcher available (Lackey) and look how that turned out. This list is in no particular order.
1. Lance Berkman
2. Jayson Werth
3. Johnny Damon
4. Magglio Ordonez
5. Andruw Jones
Trades could have been explored also, maybe for Willinham or Dejesus.
Personally, I would’ve gone all out for Holliday and signed Pinero or another middle of the rotation starter that was available. Something like a 2-3 year deal.

I agree about Holliday
although at the time, I didn’t want him signed, now I understand that the market has been kind of pushed to the point where that is the going rate. I don’t think I’d prefer any of those guys to Crawford.
Berkman has started off absurdly well, but is certainly going to cool off and is really a butcher in the outfield at this point.
Werth’s contract just wouldn’t happen from anyone except Washington, who just needed a big free agent. It’s even more unreasonable than Crawford’s.
Damon is essentially a DH who can occasionally play the outfield.
Same with Ordonez, who I was pumping up like crazy over the offseason, and now I’m quite glad the Sox didn’t sign him.
Jones is a player I’ve liked for a long time and is still valuable against lefties, but these days, he is a platoon player to say the least.
I don't like those guys either,
Maybe Berkman on a 1-2 year deal would’ve been OK. It would’ve solidified the position and opened up options via free agency and the farm that could actually be better than Crawford.

yeah at this point I would've been thrilled with Berkman
but after last year, I just thought he was toast. Oooops.
Why do you think his contract will be a good deal in 3 years? He’ll be 33 and in decline, and I seriously doubt we’ll see much inflation in other free agent contracts given the continued sorry state of our economy.
The last 4 years of the contract are what worry me the most. Of course, given his pathetic level of play this year, years 1-3 aren’t looking so promising either.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this contract goes down as one of the worst in baseball history.
Silver Lining
As was alluded to perhaps Reddick will impress and when CC returns rested Reddick will take over RF.

As much as I've supported Drew in here, might be that kind of time.
If Reddick demonstrates he deserves an everyday job, maybe you’re right.
Trust me- I’ve never been a Drew hater but he has hinted he will retire at the end of the season. Perhaps the future is now (or when CC returns).

Grade 1 strain is the least severe
If he wasn’t a pro athlete he’d probably be back to normal routine in a few days. Shouldn’t be out more than 2-3 weeks at the most, and the upcoming schedule is pretty easy with interleague and then the ASB.
So, in other words, a good time to give him a break, let him rest up and heal.
And give Reddick an audition in the process. Makes sense to me.
Of course it makes sense to you
you have said the exact same comment at least 5 times. We get it, you want Reddick to play.
playing a rookie is great in June, not so much in Aug, Sept and Oct.
2-3 weeks sounds about right for a grade 1 hamstring strain, but they tend to linger (to the extent of being chronically problematic like with Drew) and are easily re-injured. More worrisome, I believe Crawford missed significant time in 2008 with hamstring trouble.
He may be activated in 2-3 weeks, but expect him to take it easy (i.e. minimal base-stealing) for 1-2 months after that. I’d say he just lost a lot of value for the remainder of the season with this injury, but he hasn’t provided any value up to this point anyway.
A couple of weeks of a valuable player in left field?
I can dig it.

yeah
It’s not like Crawford is playing well. Maybe this can be like a fresh start for him.

March/April: .431 OPS
May: .803 OPS
June:.761 OPS
He’s not walking, he’s putting together terrible ABs, and he doesn’t know how to play LF in Fenway (he’s new though). Since April, he hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t been playing well.

I think you’re being too kind. He’s been brutally awful all year long—just slightly less awful since April.
His season WAR of 0.0 pretty much says it all.
Fortunately, when a player who’s the definition of replacement level gets injured, he’s pretty easy to replace.
I don't like WAR, but I'll agree that he's
been either of zero value or negative value.

It's Reddick Time
He’s got at least two weeks ot show whether he’s the RF of the present/future or a future 4th outfielder.
He won't be the future 4th outfielder here
Theo would trade him for something first.

Basically out until ASB. Maybe Buch too.
I guess we will find out Buchs fate on Monday when Miller must be activated.
I doubt Lowries return is so imminent.
